E) Each summer up the coast of California the pod of whales migrates

My reasoning:

A) CORRECT

B) The non-underlined portion of the sentence uses its, so we know the subject of the sentence must be singular. In this answer choice the main subject, whales, is plural so this answer choice is INCORRECT.

C) INCORRECT, because by using that, the sentence becomes a fragment. There is now no verb in the sentence.

D) INCORRECT, same reason as C, and there is also a subject verb agreement issue. Whales is plural, so it should be modified by a plural migrate.

E) INCORRECT, meaning changes, The whales migrate up the coast. The sentence does not mean up the coast, there is a pod migrating.
