The population of a bacteria culture doubles every 2 minutes. Approx. how many minutes will it take the population to grow from 1000 to 500,000?

The OG's solution is to draw out a table showing
2 mins- 2000
4 mins- 4000
6 mins- 8000
and so on.

I just did 2*2*2*2..... till I reached an approximation of 500, which was 2^18= 512 but it took me around a minute to do it, and such a problem shouldn't take that long. Any suggestions?
