The population of City A is three times the population of City B

i.e. if B = x then A = 3x

Together, Cities A and B have twice the population of City C

i.e. Together A and B = 3x + x = 4x then C=(1/2)*4x = 2x

C/B = 2x / x = 2/1

Answer: Option C

Hi vikasp99,

This question can be solved by TESTing VALUES.

We're told that the population of City A is three times the population of City B.

IF....
City A = 300 people
City B = 100 people

Next, we're told that together, Cities A and B have twice the population of City C....

City A + City B = 400 people
City C = 200 people

We're then asked for the ratio of the population of City C to the population of City B.

C:B = 200:100 = 2:1

Final Answer:

○A○ 1 : 4

We can let the population of City A = A, the population of City B = B, and the population of City C = C, and create the following equations:

A = 3B

and

A + B = 2C

We can substitute 3B for A in the equation A + B = 2C:

3B + B = 2C

4B = 2C

2B = C

2/1 = C/B

Answer: C
