The rate of increase in the number of Black elected officials nationwi [#permalink]
IMO in the question, the comparison is between last year than any other previous year. The preposition "in" before any other previous year distorts the comparison. Therefore i select option C as correct answer. Could you please help me find where I falter.

Re: The rate of increase in the number of Black elected officials nationwi [#permalink]
The rate of increase in the number of Black elected officials nationwide was greater last year than in any other year since 1975, and the rate of increase for Black women elected to office was especially high.

In this sentence the rate of increase in the number of black elected officials is being compared in two time frames. In last year vs in any other year since 1975. Therefore, correct answer choice must have in after than to have a logical comparison. Process of elimination is easy if we crack this part. Eliminate choices C, D & E due to illogical comparison though there are other problems also in these choices. Finally IMO between A & B, B loses out since in B incorrect parallelism is an issue.

(A) The rate of increase in the number of Black elected officials nationwide was greater last year than in (Correct comparison & correct parallelism)
(B) The increased rate in the number of Black elected officials nationwide was greater last year than in (Correct comparison but incorrect parallelism; The increased rate in the number of Black elected officials in the underlined part and the rate of increase for Black women elected to office in the non underlined part. I hope I am correct about this!)
(C) The rate of increase in the number of Black elected officials was greater nationwide last year than (The rate of increase was greater last year than any other year, rate is compared with any other year. Eliminate)
(D) The number of Black elected officials nationwide increased at a rate that was greater last year than (rate that was greater last year than any other year, again same mistake. Eliminate)
(E) Nationwide, the rate at which the number of Black elected officials increased last year was greater than (the rate last year was greater than any other year, again same mistake. Eliminate)

The rate of increase in the number of Black elected officials nationwi [#permalink]
First splits i noticed the first phrase of the sentence . in non-underline portion , ' rate of increase' has been used so only A & C use this phrase , parallel with non-underline portion.

In C ,
1) rate is compared with year
2) rate of X was geater nationwide last year than....wrong ( not sure)
vs
rate of X nationwide was geater

can anyone confirm this

I confused between (A) and (B)
" The rate of increase" vs. " The increased rate"
I chose B b/c A seems wordy but that's incorrect. Could you explain?

Hello npt0304,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, Option B produces an incoherent meaning due to the phrase "rate in the number of Black elected officials"; the noun "rate" refers to a speed or ration, so "rate in number" makes no sense.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
