A quick method based on choices..

Initial number of mangoes is a multiple of 5, so look for choices which when subtracted by 3 give you a multiple of 3...Hence the units digit would be 5+3=8 or 0+3=3
Only A and C left...From 5 choices, just 2 left
8 : - M:A=1:2=8:16..M have been increased by 3 and A decreased by 3, so 8-3:16+3=\(5:19\neq{5:13}\)
18 : - M:A=1:2=18:36..M have been increased by 3 and A decreased by 3, so 18-3:36+3=\(15:39={5:13}\)

Actual method

A:M=13:5=13x:5x...M is increased by 3 and A decreased by 3, so 13x-3:5x+3=2:1.....13x-3=(5x+3)2=10x+6....3x=9...x=3
So number of mangoes after increase of 3 = 5x+3=5*3+3=18

Approach:

Given:
-Ratio of Apples to Mangoes in a basket is 13:5
-If 3 Mangoes are added and same number of Apples are removed from
the basket, the ratio of Mangoes to Apples becomes 1:2

- Assume Apples and Mangoes in numbers be 13x and 5x
- Equation: \(\frac{(13x-3)}{(5x+3)} = \frac{2}{1}\)
- We get x = 3

So number of mangoes in the basket now: 5x+3 or 5*3+3 = 18

Option C

The second ratio is given as Mangoes to apples, therefore it would be (13x-3)/(5x+3) = 1/2. Please correct me if Im wrong

The answer is C= 18.

The equation will be (13x-3)=2(5x+3)
Thus, x=3.

5x+3 is the no of mangoes present now thus it becomes 18.

As mentioned, the ratio of Mangoes to Apples becomes 1:2 (or 2:1 for Apples to Mangoes) after the activity:

- Equation would be: \(\frac{(13x-3)}{(5x+3)} = \frac{2}{1}\)

Dear experts,

"If 3 Mangoes are added and the same number of Apples are removed from the basket, the ratio of Mangoes to Apples becomes 1:2" => this is the first type of conditional clause, showing the situation will happen in the future. So I understand that the taking out mangoes does not happen NOW. Therefore, a number of mangoes now (before the adjustments) is 5x => 15 = > B.

Is my thinking correct? Please advise

I think you misinterpreted the conditional clause. The conditional clause is in present tense.

Future Conditional is >> If + S.present + Then + Will

Initial ratio => Apples: Mangoes is 13:5 (Assume the number of Apples to be 13x and Mangoes to be 5x).

3 Mangoes are added and the same number of Apples are removed => Apples now are 13x-3 and Mangoes are: 5x+3.

New ratio => Mangoes: Apples is 1:2 OR Apples: Mangoes is 2:1

Hence, \(\frac{13x-3 }{ 5x+3}\) = \(\frac{2 }{ 1}\)

=> 13x-3 = 2(5x+3)
=> 13x-3 = 10x + 6
=> 3x = 9
=> x = 3

Hence, Mangoes now are: 5*3 + 3 = 18.

Solution:

We can let 13x be the number of apples and 5x the number of mangoes originally in the basket. After we remove 3 apples, the new number of apples is (13x - 3), and after we add 3 mangoes, the new number of mangoes is (5x + 3). Since the problem states that the new ratio of mangoes to apples is 1 : 2, we see that the new ratio of apples to mangoes is 2 : 1. Thus, we can express this new ratio of apples to mangoes as:

(13x - 3)/(5x + 3) = 2/1

13x - 3 = 2(5x + 3)

13x - 3 = 10x + 6

3x = 9

x = 3

Therefore, originally there were 5(3) = 15 mangoes in the basket, and now there are 15 + 3 = 18 mangoes in the basket.

Answer: C
