E

(A) to lead to 55 percent more delays at airports, and prompts
(B) leading to 55 percent more delay at airports and prompting
(C) to lead to a 55 percent increase in delay at airports and prompt
(D) to lead to an increase of 55 percent in delays at airports, and prompted
(E) leading to a 55-percent increase in delays at airports and prompting

B and E were the only contestants for me. Leading sounded better than 'to lead' in this place and out 'B' and 'E', 'E' makes more sense because of 'increase in delays' instead of 'more delay'.

Note the 3:2 split, 3 says to lead to which is unidomatic so out.

Now you never says leading to X percent, rather you say leading to a X percent (Idomatic)

So E is the best one for me as well.

leading and promoting is a parallel structure that fits perfect here.
55 percent increase is better use than 55 percent more.

A gerund is required after the comma to maintain the continuity.
B,c remain

55 percent more delay - sounds awkaward

Hi,
I see that OA is E, but I have concern and I will be happy if you can explain it.

B) leading to 55 percent more delay at airports and prompting
E) leading to a 55-percent increase in delays at airports and prompting

55 percent more delay and 55 percent increase in delays have different meaning. b means the increase of the number of delays, but E increase in delays (it could be duration), b have original meaning.
Is it important here?

Excellent point. Even though I chose E, I was wondering about B. I chose E because I instinctively felt that the sentence is talking about increase in number of delays to correspond with the increase in the number of flights. B seems to suggest - as rightly observed by you - a increase in delay-duration suggesting that the number of delays itself has not increased but only their duration - which seems to run counter to the overall intent of the sentence. My 2 cents.

"More" is used to compare things. Here, in this sentence, we are not comparing anything. So Choice B is not correct.

Choice E should be the answer.

Well done people. Just want to sum up -

If you ever see a split like this

Delete the first one and take the second one. You will be correct 99% of the time since second leads to cause and effect.

The recent surge in the number of airplane flights has clogged the nation's air-traffic control system, leading to -----------> cause = surge in the traffic , effect = delays at the airport and safety being compromised.

gmat is in love with cause and effect. Tricks of the trade !

Well done !

That leaves B and E. E is perfect where as B sounds wordy. So E.

I have chosen E for this question:

A. The prepositional phrase is wordy and it is confusing. It is better to use the modifiers "leading...and prompting."

B. This is a little bit wordy.

C. Parallelism is broken here - it should be to lead...and to prompt. Also, the use of the prepositional phrase is wordy.

D. Again, the prepositional phrase is wordy. Parallelism is broken here because of "to lead...and prompted."

E. This clearly and accurately describes the intended meaning. We have 2 modifiers in parallel "leading...and prompting."

The recent surge in the number of airplane flights has clogged the nation's air-traffic control system, to lead to 55 percent more delays at airports, and prompts fears among some officials that safety is being compromised.

Meaning;
The surge is causing delays and prompting fears
verb+ing is needed to show the overall effect which is leading the delay and prompting fear.

A,C,D out
B is incorrect because "55 percent more "is incorrect

(A) to lead to 55 percent more delays at airports, and prompts
(B) leading to 55 percent more delay at airports and prompting
(C) to lead to a 55 percent increase in delay at airports and prompt
(D) to lead to an increase of 55 percent in delays at airports, and prompted
(E) leading to a 55-percent increase in delays at airports and prompting CORRECT

The recent surge is not done three things. It has done 1 thing that is clogging the nation’s the trafic control system. And what happened when the nation’s traffic system is clogged that has lead and promp. Therefore, A , C and D is out.

55 percent more delay …… THERE MUST BE “THAN” NEEDED because more is used to compare the two things . B OUT
