So the person is left with 1.24-0.34 = 0.9 So the person can travel next (90/6) times 1/5 miles i.e 15 *1/5 miles = 3 miles. SO total distance is 3 + 0.25 = 3.25 miles(C) Senior Manager Joined: 04 Jan 2006 Posts: 279 Re: PS - Algebra [#permalink] ### Show Tags 22 Oct 2007, 15:46 bmwhype2 wrote: The rental charge for a car is 34 cents for the 1st 1/4 mile driven and 6 cents for ever 1/5 mile driven over the initial 1/4 mile. The rental charge for a car is 34 cents for the first 1/4 mile driven and 6 cents for every 1/5 mile driven over the initial 1/4 mile. If a man paid $1.24 in rental charges, how many miles did he drive? We know that 100 cents = 1$
Therefore , Total Amount man paid = $1.24 = 124 cents. for first 1/4 mile = 34 cents = 124-34 = 90 cents 1/5 of a mile = 6 cents = 15 mile. total miles drive = 15 mile + 0.25 mile = 15.25 miles CEO Status: Nothing comes easy: neither do I want. Let n be the total miles driven.

total amount = rental charge for 1/4 mile initially + rental charge as 6 cents per 1/5 mile

124 = 34 + (n-1/4) * 30 ( 6cents for 1/5 miles => 30 cents/mile...distance chargeable at this rate = n-1/4

=> n = 3+ 1/4 = 3.25 miles

he drove 3 1/4 miles. first quarter mile which cost 34 cents. So subtract 34 cents from $1.24. Remainder of trip cost 90 cents. Divide this by 6c per 1/5 of mile. 90/6=15. 15/5 of a mile is 3 miles. Add back the original 1/4 mile. Subtract off $0.34 --> gives us$0.9 left

How many times can we go 1/5 mile @ $0.06 with$0.9? A: $0.9/$0.06 = 15 times --> 15(1/5 mi) = 3 mi

Thus, we get 3.25 miles
