The rowing speed of a man in still water is 7.5 kmph. In a river flowing at 1.5 kmph, it takes the same boatman 50 minutes to row a certain distance and come back. Find the distance (one way).

A. 1 km
B. 2 km
C. 3 km
D. 4 km
E. 6 km

His speed with the current is 9 kmph, and his speed against the current is 6 kmph. We see that 50 minutes is 50/60 = ⅚ of an hour. Letting D = the one-way distance, we can create the time equation as:

D/9 + D/6 = 5/6

Multiplying by 90, we have:

10D + 15D = 75

25D = 75

D = 3

Answer: C
