The South-African anti-apartheid revolutionary, Nelson Mandela, also known as Madiba or Tata (Father), faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come out of prison.

The passage talks about Nelson Mandela and two main things that happened to him

1) He faced several challenges, one of which was the imprisonment for 27 years.
2) He was elected president only four years after getting out of prison

We need to present these two main things properly.

(A) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come We are missing a connector such as "and" between "faced several challenges" and "was elected the president.

(B) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after coming Fixes the mistake described in A). Hence, it's the correct choice.

(C) who faced several charges during his fight against the government, having spent 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come
The sentence lacks a verb. "Mandela, who faced...and was elected....". What did he do?

(D) faced several charges during his fight against the government while spending 27 years in prison and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he came This is a good contender imo. However, one of the charges he faced was his imprisonment. That's why it doesn't make sense to say "faced several charges...while spending 27 years in prison".
(E) who faced several charges during his fight against the government and spent 27 years in prison, being elected the President of South Africa in 1
994, only four years after he came Same as C): We're lacking a verb. "Mandela, who faced several charges and spent 27 in prison, being elected"

Hope that helps :-)

(A) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come

(B) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after coming

(C) who faced several charges during his fight against the government, having spent 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come

(D) faced several charges during his fight against the government while spending 27 years in prison and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he came

(E) who faced several charges during his fight against the government and spent 27 years in prison, being elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he came

Lets break the sentence--->
Subject-->Nelson Mandela ,Verb-->faced and was elected
Error Analysis-->
1.SV - Singular subject singular verb no error.,however for verb was elected is after comma so no noun associated with it.
Choice analysis:

(A) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come--Error as discussed above

(B) faced several charges during his fight against the government, spending 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after coming--Correct

(C) who faced several charges during his fight against the government, having spent 27 years in prison, and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he had come--Error who is ambiguous and parallelism issue also

(D) faced several charges during his fight against the government while spending 27 years in prison and was elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he came- meaning error -It seems to tell that Nelson Mandela faced several charges when spending 27 years in prison.

(E) who faced several charges during his fight against the government and spent 27 years in prison, being elected the President of South Africa in 1994, only four years after he came. --same error as C and no verb for subject.

Why do we need a connector in the above sentence ? Can you please brief that.
