A. that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank, shuts - Not a sentence. Conjunction is missing

B. gauging the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank shut - Not a sentence. We have 'a sensor.....did not properly respond in tests'. The verb 'shut' again refers to 'sensor' and needs a conjunction.

C. that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and shuts - Correct

D. gauging the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and shuts - Parallelism error

E. that gauges the fuel level for the external liquid hydrogen tank shut - Repeats the error in A and B

The underlined portion of the sentence talks about the various functions of the sensor.
A sensor(singular in nature) must agree with the verb(singular in nature). Both gauges
and shuts are singular verbs. The meaning is clearly conveyed in Option C, which is the correct answer

IMO the answer is A.

Verb of 'sensor' is shuts and 'that' is 'guages'. Here, 'that guages....' modifies 'sensor'. So the question is right as is.

Read the non-underlined portion as well, and you will see the verb "did not respond", which has no subject. To provide a subject to this verb you have to "lock" shuts into modifying phrase "that gauges ...and shuts".

Takeaway: always read non-underlined portion

The space center decided to delay the shuttle’s launch for a third time because
a sensor that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and (that) shuts off the main engines when the tank is empty did not respond properly in tests.

A. that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank, shuts - wrong for above reasons

B. gauging the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank shut

C. that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and shuts - correct

D. gauging the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and shuts

E. that gauges the fuel level for the external liquid hydrogen tank shut - wrong for above reasons

A. that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank, shuts: WRONG; THAT CLAUSE IS AN ESSENTIAL CLAUSE AND DO NOT TAKE A COMMA. ALSO, TWO LISTS CANNOT BE SPLICED ONLY BY A COMMA

B. gauging the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank shut: WRONG; TWO LISTS CONNECTED WITHOUT ANY CONJUNCTION

C. that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and shuts: BEST OF THE LOT. THOUGH IMO,
* WHEN THAT IS USED AS A CONNECTOR AND NOT AS A SUBJECT OF A DEPENDENT CLAUSE, IT SHOULD BE REPEATED IN BOTH LISTS.I.E. THAT GAUGES + AND + THAT SHUTS OFF
* OR, IF THE LISTS IS PROVIDING TWO SUBSEQUENT ACTIONS, THEN CONSTRUCTION SHOULD BE: THAT GAUGES + AND + THEREBY/SUBSEQUENTLY + SHUTS OFF

D. gauging the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and shuts: WRONG; PARALLELISM ERROR- PRESENT PARTICIPLE VS PREDICATE

E. that gauges the fuel level for the external liquid hydrogen tank shut: WRONG; SAME AS B

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

A critical component of this problem appears past the underline as you near the end of the sentence: the verb phrase "did not respond properly in tests" requires a subject.

That subject is "sensor" (the word immediately prior to the underline), so that the streamlined sentence reads "the space center delayed the launch because a sensor did not respond properly in tests." Because of this required structure, you need everything in the underlined portion to act as a modifier for "sensor."

Choices (B) and (D) violate that need by using the active verb "shut" ("the sensor that gauges the fuel level shut down"), thereby completing the clause. The correct answer must link "shut" to "gauge" so that both verbals are part of the modifying phrase.

Choice (A) fails to properly connect the two verbals, instead completing the thought with a comma before "shuts" and leaving "shuts" unconnected to "gauges." And choice (D) is not parallel in its modifying verbs ("gauging...and shuts"), thereby creating an invalid structure.

Only choice (C), the correct choice, properly links the two verbals into one modifier. Therefore (C) is the correct answer.

Bunuel

How is C parallel? We need to have 'that gauges and .......that shuts'. Only D looks to like a possible answer.

Hey KS15 ,

I am happy to help. :-)

"That" in option C is implied here. We call it Ellipsis. Both the below versions are perfectly fine:

that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and [that] shuts

that gauges the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank and that shuts

D is wrong because "gauging" (a gerund) isn't || to shuts(a verb).

Does that make sense?

Ans: Here the sensor is doing two things:
1) Gauging the fuel level of the external liquid hydrogen tank
2) and shutting off the main engines when the tank gets empty

So the answer is (c).

A is wrong because the placement of ','
B and D are wrong because usage of 'gauging'.
E shut is plural verb, but our subject is singular.

C is the best option.
