The table above shows the fees that must be paid to a car rental agency if a rental car is returned late. Hours late is always rounded up to the nearest integer. A customer rented a car for $160.00 and is late returning the car at the appointed drop-off time of 6:00 a.m. Rounded up to the nearest hour, when did he return the car?

(1) The late fee for his rental was $40.00.
(2) If he had returned the car one hour earlier, he would have paid $24.00 less in late fees.

IMO C

1)The late fee for his rental was $40.00.

\(\frac{40}{160}=25%\) So he return his car in an interval of 6 - 9 hours later. Not sufficient

2)If he had returned the car one hour earlier, he would have paid $24.00 less in late fees.

\(\frac{24}{160}=15%\) So there is a gap between the intervals of 15%, that gives us 2 options 6 - 9 hours later (10+15=25%) and 10 - 15 hours later (25+15=40%). Not sufficient

Now (1)+(2)
: given statement 1 we know that he returned his car from 6a.m.+6 hours = 12a.m. to 6a.m.+9 hours = 3p.m. interval = [12am, 3pm]
Given statement 2 we know that if he had returned the car one hour earlier, he would have paid less. So he must have returned his car at 12am
IMO C
