The tiny nation of Navatanya won seven gold medals at the last Olympics. Most of the country’s top athletes come from impoverished rural areas where a career in sports is seen as a way to break the grip of poverty. However, the government of Navatanya considers athletes to be government employees, and it strictly limits their commercial activities. Because of this, several of the athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics have decided to become coaches, and they will no longer compete at the international level.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must also be true?

A)It is unlikely that Navatanya will win at least seven gold medals at the next Olympics.

B)Several athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics will not compete at the next Olympics

C)Some of the athletes from Navatanya who competed at the last Olympics will not be at the next Olympics.

D)No athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics came from wealthy areas of the country.

E)The athletes that will represent Navatanya at the next Olympics will not be the same group of athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics.

The passage does not make any predictions about success at the next Olympics. For instance, it doesn't rule out other top athletes emerging before the next Olympics.

B)Several athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics will not compete at the next Olympics
The key phrase here is 'who won gold medals' and this statement would be a correct answer if this phrase was removed. The passage implies that some athletes have retired because of restrictions on commercial activities, but does not mention whether these athletes won gold medals or not.

C)Some of the athletes from Navatanya who competed at the last Olympics will not be at the next Olympics.
The phrase 'be at' is too wide. Those retired athletes who have become coaches will still 'be at' the next Olympics, so this statement actually contradicts the passage.

D)No athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics came from wealthy areas of the country.
The background information in the passage says that 'most of the country's top athletes' come from poorer areas, which implies that some don't. In any case, the passage does not reveal whether the athletes who retired had won gold medals (this is suggested but cannot be proved).

E)The athletes that will represent Navatanya at the next Olympics will not be the same group of athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics.
If you flip this statement around - all the old athletes are still competing - then the passage would contradict itself when talking about athletes retiring to become coaches. So this is a clear assumption in the passage

IMO E. It was a toss up between C & E for me.

A)It is unlikely that Navatanya will win at least seven gold medals at the next Olympics. --Can't deduce this from the stem.

B)Several athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics will not compete at the next Olympics. --Same as A

C)Some of the athletes from Navatanya who competed at the last Olympics will not be at the next Olympics.-- Can't say anything definitely as I feel there is a difference between athletes from Navatanya who competed at last olympics and athletes who represented Navatanya last olympics

D)No athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics came from wealthy areas of the country. -- Again can't deduce this.

E)The athletes that will represent Navatanya at the next Olympics will not be the same group of athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics. This could be the one as understood from the stem.

Because of this, several of the athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics have decided to become coaches, and they will no longer compete at the international level.

=> The group of people who represented Navatanya last olympics might not be the same as the group that will represent Navatanya at next olympics.

Please provide OA along with OE to understand better.

Nice approach . OA is "E" . I got confused with option C & E and picked the wrong answer .

Here's the OE for a better understanding -

Explanation: Since several athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics will no longer compete, they will not compete at the next Olympics. Therefore, the group that competes at the next Olympics will not be the same.

(A) The athletes from Navatanya might be just as likely or more likely to win in the next Olympics. There is no way to know.

(B) We cannot say for sure which athletes will not compete. It is possible that all the gold winners will return.

(C) The athletes who are no longer competing might still be in attendance at the next Olympics as coaches or spectators.

(D) Most of the top athletes in the country might come from poor areas, as the argument states, but there still might have been some gold winners who came from rich areas.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

IMO C is correct
It was battle between C & E
Eliminated E because its too strong in phrasing that not even a single athlete ,who represented Navatanya last year, will be part of this years group.
But this fact is no where to be spotted in the stimulus

Kindly correct me if my approach is incorrect

-Does it mean to say that they wont compete as coaches in the international level. If so , then C will be the answer otherwise its between C and E .

What makes E better than C.
C)Some of the athletes from Navatanya who competed at the last Olympics will not be at the next Olympics.
>> May be they will be there as coach.
E)The athletes that will represent Navatanya at the next Olympics will not be the same group of athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics

In (E)
How can it be must be true?

"Decide to become" is not same with "become"
There could be someone who decide to become but couldn`t

In the same manner

There could be someone who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics, now decide to become a coach, and are no longer compete in international level but will represent Navatanya at the next Olympics.

We do not know it. Too general statement.

B)Several athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics will not compete at the next Olympics
Again, we do not know it. Maybe these athlets (who won gold) did not become coaches

C)Some of the athletes from Navatanya who competed at the last Olympics will not be at the next Olympics.
Nice trap. We do not know it. Maybe these athlets will be at the next Olympics as coaches for example

D)No athletes from Navatanya who won gold medals at the last Olympics came from wealthy areas of the country.
We do not know it

E)The athletes that will represent Navatanya at the next Olympics will not be the same group of athletes who represented Navatanya at the last Olympics.
Good. Some of these athlets became coaches, so yes, they will not represent Navatanya. The set will be different anyway

Such a good & tricky question. Especially options B, C & D really need attention to details.

C can't be the answer because of "BE AT" phrase in the option. sure, several have decided to become coaches. But this doesn't mean that they will not BE AT the next olympics. they will not represent probably but attendance was never rasied in the stimulus
