Competition Mode Question

The two main factors determining the climate of a region are its latitude and altitude. The three cities of Jubilee, Joy and Jest are all on the same latitude and are spread over only 100 miles on this line. However, the difference in temperature throughout most of the year between Jubilee and Jest on one side and Joy on the other is more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Which of the following, if true, would most contribute to an explanation of the facts above?

(A) It is much harder to get to Joy by car than it is to get to Jubilee and Jest.

(B) While the city of Joy is quite a tourist attraction, only 0.5% of the revenue made in the cities of Jubilee and Jest comes from the tourism industry.

(C) During most of the year short clothes are worn in the city of Joy, while in Jubilee and in Jest warmer clothes are usually needed.

(D) While the city of Joy is situated high in the mountains, Jubilee and Jest are located not more than 200 feet above sea level.

(E) Whereas Joy is populated mostly by affluent people, Jubilee and Jest are home to many people of lower socio-economic status.

(A) It is much harder to get to Joy by car than it is to get to Jubilee and Jest. - Out of Scope

(B) While the city of Joy is quite a tourist attraction, only 0.5% of the revenue made in the cities of Jubilee and Jest comes from the tourism industry. - Irrelevant

(C) During most of the year short clothes are worn in the city of Joy, while in Jubilee and in Jest warmer clothes are usually needed. - This Information is already provided in the passage in the form of difference in temperature.

(D) While the city of Joy is situated high in the mountains, Jubilee and Jest are located not more than 200 feet above sea level. - Correct - Same Latitude, different Altitude, explains the Difference in temperature.

(E) Whereas Joy is populated mostly by affluent people, Jubilee and Jest are home to many people of lower socio-economic status. - Out of Scope.

The argument initially states that climate depends on latitude and altitude.
After that it says all 3 region are on same latitude and are spread over 100 mile. But juibile and jest shows 30 degree temp diff when compared to the temp of Joy.

Option A,B,C,E introduces irrelevant info.

D clearly talks about diff in altitude which backs the premise of the argument.

E is therefore the winner

arg
=climate det by lat and alt
=xyz and same lat
=but xy vs z temp differ by >30F

explain
ans (D) shows that they despite the same lat, they have dif alt, which determines climate.

Irrelevant- as can't answer the temperature difference

(B) While the city of Joy is quite a tourist attraction, only 0.5% of the revenue made in the cities of Jubilee and Jest comes from the tourism industry.
irrelevant again

(C) During most of the year short clothes are worn in the city of Joy, while in Jubilee and in Jest warmer clothes are usually needed.
-may tell about the effects but not the reason, not the answer

(D) While the city of Joy is situated high in the mountains, Jubilee and Jest are located not more than 200 feet above sea level.
Correct- as it explains the reason of temperature difference

(E) Whereas Joy is populated mostly by affluent people, Jubilee and Jest are home to many people of lower socio-economic status
Irrelevant again

TWO FACTORS THAT DETERMINE CLIMATE CHANGE:-1.LATITUDE 2.ALTITUDE . NOW THREE CITIES WITH SAME LATITUDE BUT STILL WITNESS TEMPERATURE INCREASE(CLIMATE CHANGE).THEN ANOTHER FACTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS i.e.ALTITUDE

Which of the following, if true, would most contribute to an explanation of the facts above?

(A) It is much harder to get to Joy by car than it is to get to Jubilee and Jest.IRRELEVANT,HOW TO REACH THE CITY IS PURELY OF OUT OF SCOPE

(B) While the city of Joy is quite a tourist attraction, only 0.5% of the revenue made in the cities of Jubilee and Jest comes from the tourism industry.IRRELEVANT,REVENUE FROM TOURISM INDUSTRY IS OUT OF SCOPE

(C) During most of the year short clothes are worn in the city of Joy, while in Jubilee and in Jest warmer clothes are usually needed.IRRELEVANT,WHAT TYPES OF CLOTHES WORN DOESNT CONTRIBUTE TO THE FACTS ABOVE,OUT OF SCOPE

(D) While the city of Joy is situated high in the mountains, Jubilee and Jest are located not more than 200 feet above sea level.THIS IS OUR ANSWER EXACTLY AS OUR PRE THINKING

(E) Whereas Joy is populated mostly by affluent people, Jubilee and Jest are home to many people of lower socio-economic status.IRRELEVENT,HOW POPULATION OF AFFLUENT PEOPLE ACCOUNTS FOR THE CLIMATE CHANGE IS NOT DISCUSEED IN THE STIMULUS.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The two main factors determining the climate of a region are its latitude and altitude. The three cities of Jubilee, Joy and Jest are all on the same latitude and are spread over only 100 miles on this line. However, the difference in temperature throughout most of the year between Jubilee and Jest on one side and Joy on the other is more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Which of the following, if true, would most contribute to an explanation of the facts above?

(A) It is much harder to get to Joy by car than it is to get to Jubilee and Jest.

Incorrect.

This is a Paradox question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a new premise which best resolves the apparent discrepancy between the existing premises:

Premise A: the climate of a place is affected by latitude (north-south) and altitude (height)

Premise B: Jubilee, Joy and Jest are cities on the same latitude (horizontal line around the globe).

Premise C: It's much colder or warmer in Joy than it is in Jubilee and Jest throughout most of the year.

    Resolving Premise: ?

The fact that it's easier to get to one place than to another doesn't resolve the paradox of why relatively close by cities have dramatically different climates.

(B) While the city of Joy is quite a tourist attraction, only 0.5% of the revenue made in the cities of Jubilee and Jest comes from the tourism industry.

The fact that many more tourists go to Joy than to Jubilee or Jest doesn't, on its own, resolve the paradox of why relatively close cities have dramatically different climates. What makes Joy special?

(C) During most of the year short clothes are worn in the city of Joy, while in Jubilee and in Jest warmer clothes are usually needed.

Incorrect.

While this answer choice helps identify Joy as having a warmer climate, it does not help us resolve the paradox. The fact that people need to dress differently in Joy is derived from the paradox of the extreme difference in temperature. What makes Joy special?

(D) While the city of Joy is situated high in the mountains, Jubilee and Jest are located not more than 200 feet above sea level.

If the three cities share the same latitude, it must be their different altitude that creates their climate differences.

(E) Whereas Joy is populated mostly by affluent people, Jubilee and Jest are home to many people of lower socio-economic status.

Incorrect.

The socio-economic status of the citizens has no effect on a region's climate and therefore cannot explain the paradox at hand.

Only answer option D remotely talks about the latitude and altitude factors, other options are just unnecessary details about the cities. So, clear winner is D

So we have to find something which can explain the difference in temperature.

(A) It is much harder to get to Joy by car than it is to get to Jubilee and Jest. -- OUT OF SCOPE

(B) While the city of Joy is quite a tourist attraction, only 0.5% of the revenue made in the cities of Jubilee and Jest comes from the tourism industry. --We ahave to find something which can explain temp. difference , not the revenues

(C) During most of the year short clothes are worn in the city of Joy, while in Jubilee and in Jest warmer clothes are usually needed. --again wearing some types of clothes doesnt explain difference in temperature

(D) While the city of Joy is situated high in the mountains, Jubilee and Jest are located not more than 200 feet above sea level.location of cities determine their temprature -- CORRECT

(E) Whereas Joy is populated mostly by affluent people, Jubilee and Jest are home to many people of lower socio-economic status. -- Status of people never decides city's temperature  - OUT
