should be 'E'.

Only 'E' does the correct comparison between the use if pesticides today and that of ten years ago.

E.
'it' has to be there to make the comparison parallel
B is wrong for the above reason.

I will go with E as well. It uses the correct idiom "as extensive as" and brings the correct meaning of the sentence.

E is the best answer....as extensive as (correct idiom)...., if not more so...

A is not correct..more so than...

B compares "use" with years ago.

C is wrong because more is used for years.

D is wrong as B

E is correct.

The "use" is compared with "10 years ago" in choices from A through
D.Also "equal" has a connotation much more than stated here. Equal
should be used strictly for measurements like 2 and 3 equals 5.

Usage: if not more
"if not more" means something like "but maybe it's more."

For example:
1. I worked at least 70 hours last week, if not more.
2. While you were at lunch, there were at least ten calls for you, if
not more.

I picked B, and got it wrong...

well, just a quick question...I discredited E because of the part "if not more so"at the end of E...it just sounds kind of awkard to me, can someone tell me what kind of sentence structure that is?

To supplement previous explanations on this post...

I believe despite the usage 'as extensive as' it was is a must and hence 'E' looks good.

C - would have been better if it had as extenssive as it was

1. for comparison we use "as extensive as" - Idiom
2. ten years ago or more: If I supress ten years ago in choice C then rest of the sentence makes no sense to me.
3. Use equal while mathematical quantity is mentioned. Say, population was 180 equal to ......
4. correct comparison: the use..is... as extensive as it was...

(A) equally extensive or more so than ten years ago --- point 3
(B) equal to or more extensive than ten years ago --- point 3
(C) as extensive as ten years ago or more --- point 2
(D) equal to, if not more, than ten years ago --- point 3
(E) as extensive as it was ten years ago, if not more so -- Ok - supports point 1 , 2 and 4

Hence I picked E

Go with E,

in all other choices the comparison is invalid. The 'use' must be compared to 'use', only E compares 'use' to 'use'. Other choices compare 'use' to 'ten years ago'
