What is being compared in this question? -- Volume of Lake Superior with the volume of Lake Baikal.

(A) is less than half of Lake Baikal
This choice says volume of Lake superior is <1/2 of Lake Baikal. So volume of one lake is compared with another lake itself.

(B) is less than half that of Lake Baikal
replace “that of” with “volume” – the volume of lake superior <1/2 volume (that of) of Lake Baiklal.

(C) is less than half as compared to Lake Baikal
Same as A.

(D) has less than half what Lake Baikal has
Volume of one lake IS less than volume of second lake. “HAS” is wrong. What does volume of lake superior HAS?

(E) has less than half as compared to what Lake Baikal has
Same as D.

B is the correct answer

verb "to be" is the correct verb so D&E eliminated
B is the only option that refers to the "volume" by "that" A&C eliminated

Text Explanation
The subject is volume. First of all, it sounds awkward to say that "volume … has less than half." Eliminate choices (D) & (E).

For a logical comparison, we need to compare volume to volume.

Choice (A) says the volume of Superior is less than half of Lake Baikal. This would pass as acceptable in colloquial English, but technically, we are comparing the volume of one lake to the existence of the other. This is an illogical comparison. (A) is incorrect.

Choice (B) compares the volume of Superior to "that of" (i.e. the volume of) Lake Baikal. This is logically and grammatically correct.

Choice (C) uses a much wordier and awkward construction. Technically, this is correct, but it is an indirect and roundabout way to express very simple information. Choice (B) is much more straightforward, so (B) is the best answer.
