I am not convinced with your explaination for option A.
For example: Ram will go to Bhutan because he won a scholarship.
He won first and then will go to Bhutan.

Ram will go to Bhutan as a result of winning the scholarship.
Similarly Winning first and then he will go to Bhutan.

Hence I feel that Option A is not incorrect because of the altering first and harming second logic you have stated.
Between A and C the only difference I can see is that Option C is more concise.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Nitesh

I chose A becasue I thought the parallelism in the structure might be preferable. I’d say C, aside from just sounding better, is more direct in terms of what the result of the climate change is. A rearranges the sentence unnecessarily I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ?

I’d also be interested in case someone has a better explanation.

confused between A and C.. why is A incorrect?

When distinguishing between options, one must be clear about what comes first and what is the cause and effect (in these type of questions). Additionally, cause-effect questions are very common in all the sections of verbal.

In A:
It is passive. The order of cause-effect is flipped. "altering the environment harms the habitats"must be the right order whereas
In C:
Explanation is in right order and is active.

Sensing this difference in precision would be the key.

Coggi: Consider this explanation:

Global warming will cause havoc among birds
Cause 1 = Global Warming
Effect 1 = Cause Havoc

Global warming will cause havoc among birds by harming their habitats
Cause 1 = Global Warming
Effect 1 = Cause Havoc
Effect 2 = Harming Habitats

Global warming will cause havoc among birds by harming their habitats as a result of altering the environment
Cause 1 = Global Warming
Effect 1= Cause Havoc
Effect 2 = Harming Habitats
Effect 3 = Altering the environments
However, as a result makes it sound like it is actually a cause, not an effect thus creating confusion

Altering the environment - Cause or effect?!

However, when you write the sentence like this:

Global warming causes havoc among migratory birds by altering the environment in ways harmful to the birds' habitats

Global Warming (cause 1) -> Causes Havoc (effect 1)
Alters environment (cause 2- in continuation to effect 1) - > harms habitats (effect 2)

Hope this makes things clear!

I have a slightly different question: Shouldn't option C have 'harmful to the birds' habitats' instead of 'their habitats'? Does the presence of 'environment' in the sentence not pose a problem for usage of 'their' as a pronoun?
