Theologian Martin Luther changed his appearance so as to travel around Worms without being recognized.

A. so as to travel
B. and so could travel
C. to travel
D. so that he could travel
E. in order that he would travel

Can some explain the difference between C and D?
Is C wrong only because of the change in meaning? i.e, to travel represents the intention. He changed his appearance to do something.
Per my understanding, the original sentence tries to depict that Martin Luther changed his appearance for some intention. Does D then change the meaning?
