There are 19 batters on a baseball team. Every batter bats either right-handed only, left-handed only, or both right-handed and left-handed. How many of the 19 batters bat left-handed?

(1) 7 of the batters bat right-handed but do not bat left-handed. (2) 4 of the batters bat both right-handed and left-handed.

I was using the formula total=only A+only B +both A and b

since in smt1 only A is given and since both is missing chose option A as insufficient and with the available information in option B.chose the answer as C please correct me were i made the mistake

There are 19 batters on a baseball team. Every batter bats either right-handed only, left-handed only, or both right-handed and left-handed. How many of the 19 batters bat left-handed?

Notice that {left-handed}={left-handed only}+{both}

(1) 7 of the batters bat right-handed but do not bat left-handed --> {right-handed only}=7, thus the remaining 12 betters are {left-handed only} or {both}, so 12 betters are {left-handed}. Sufficient.

(2) 4 of the batters bat both right-handed and left-handed. Clearly not sufficient.

Bunnel, According to the question stem does that mean if the batter is right-handed only, left-handed only then he will not be both(right &left) handed batter right? Tats why we are assuming the value of both to be zero in the statement1.Please do let me know whether my understanding is right!!!

The batters can be "right-handed only", "left-handed only", or "both right and left handed".

The question is asking "How many of the 19 batters bat left-handed". The answer number will include the categories "left-handed only" and "both right and left handed". This number will be same as total minus "right-handed only". [Remember, question is not asking to find out "left-handed only".]

1. As 7 batters are "right-handed only", remaining batters will fall under "left-handed only" or "both right and left handed". Answer will be 19-7=12. Sufficient.

2. Number of "both right and left handed" provided. To find the answer, we need one more information ... either number of "right-handed only" or number of "left-handed only". Not sufficient.

The language IS confusing...many would think it is asking for OL(only left no right), but it is actually asking for OL + B ... since both here consists of left handed players too. Thanks for sharing the question..

why is the answer A) and not C) - why do you only need A rather than both to solve the problem?

Let batter who bats only right handed = R batter who bats only left handed = L and both handed = B R+L+B=19 We need to determine L+B =?

(1) 7 of the batters bat right-handed but do not bat left-handed. R= 7 L+B= 19-7 = 12 Sufficient

(2) 4 of the batters bat both right-handed and left-handed. B=4 Not sufficient
