There are two sections A and B of a class, consisting of 36 and 44 students' respectively. If the average weight of section A is 40kg and that of section B is 35kg, find the average weight of the whole class.

A. 36.5
B. 37
C. 37.25
D. 37.66
E. 37.75

use weighted avg
w1/w2= ( a2-a)/(a-a1)

36/44 = ( 35-a) / ( a-40)

a = 37.25

We can create the average weight of the entire class as follows:

(40 x 36 + 35 x 44)/80

(40 x 36)/80 + (35 x 44)/80

36/2 + (35 x 11)/20

18 + (7 x 11)/4

18 + 77/4 = 18 + 19.25 = 37.25

Answer: C
