No where does it say that when the first Paper back copy was issued no more hard copies were being sold.

36000 of HC were sold before the first PB was issued , and assuming that after the first PB was issued HC continued to sell.

My equation was based on the following logic: suppose X copies of HC sold between the first and last copies of PB.

Then total PB = 9( 36000 + X) as total PB = 9 * total HC sold.

And Total HC = 36000 + whatever HC sold in between the first and last PB, here we are taking this as X.

hence Final Equation = Total HC + Total PB = 441000

Total HC = 36000 + X

Total PB =9 (36000 +X)

36000 + X + 9(36000 +X) =441000

On solving we get x= 8100

total PB = 9* ( 36000 +8100)

=9 *44100

=396,900

Ans = E
