Let x = Average daily expense per head

This becomes x-1 when 8 students are added

Then orginal expense = 46x

Expense after the 8 students join = 54(x-1)

We are given

54(x-1) = 46x + 42

Solving for x, x=12

We need to find original expense 46x which is 46*12=552
