this is a variation i made on a gmetprep data sufficiency question (i.e. it has a twist, the original didn't have...), try to solve and see if you find the twist... enjoy.

if the sign & denotes either substraction or multiplication, and k is an integer. what is the value of 2 & k ?

1) 5 & k = 3
2) 2 & 0 = k

2&k

(1) Let & mean -:
5-k = 3 => k = 2
So, 2&k = 0

Let & mean *:
5*k = 3 => k = 3/5
Not possible, so & means -

So, 2&k = 0. Sufficient

(2) Let & mean -:
2-0 = k => k = 2
So, 2&k = 0

Let & mean *:
2*0 = k => k = 0
So, 2&k = 0

So, in either case, 2&k = 0. Sufficient

So, either statement is sufficient.
