This is a classic example in which knowing an idiom can make a question relatively easy. Not knowing the proper idiom, on the other hand, well the question becomes a little more difficult. With this question we at least have a little more to go on. First off, 'economical' vs. 'economic'; to be 'economical' is to frugal. Clearly caterpillars who spend their money wisely is not what the sentence is trying to convey. Out with (B), (C), and (E). (D) is a classic comma splice, leaving us with (A).

‘Awkward’ doesn’t really explain much. I read the magoosh response but it doesn’t explain what is ‘comma splicey’ about it.
I’ve done a search and ‘such is’ seemingly starts sentences the majority of the time rather than being placed after a comma. Is this the comma splice?

(A) they are so voracious that they have become an economic

(B) they are of such voracity, they have become an economical

(C) so voracious are they as to become an economical

(D) such is their voracity, they become an economic

(E) there is so much voracity that it has become an economical

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

A

The wrong choices use illogical and unidiomatic phrases. In (B),caterpillars can’t be “of such voracity.” In (C), you can’t say something is so voraciousas to become a threat to farmers. In (E), there is no way to tell that the caterpillars are the ones being voracious.
