Hi All,

I would like some advice on buying a suit. I want to look good and from what I've heard, I should try to find a really good tailor. My question is where do I buy the suits from?. Department stores?. I don't want to break the bank but I'm willing to pay good money for a suit that I can wear on interviews and business engagements. Any advice is apprecitead.

Thanks

Maybe you could check out countries in Southeast Asia?

If you could spare a vacation to Vietnam, the suits there are very cheap, made of good quality and of immaculate craft!

Depends where you are. As vgeech mentioned you can find very good tailors in southeast Asia that'll make you a made-to-measure suit for less than US$100. At retail in the US, you'll probably be looking at around$400 on the low end. If you don't have a lot to spend, you're better off spending a bit less on the suit and a bit more on tailoring the suit to fit you better.

Also take a look through this thread, there are a lot of tips on sales from different higher end stores (Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom, etc) where you can get very steep discounts on their suits. For example last month Brooks Brothers was giving 50% off on their suits, which brought the price down to $400-$450.

If you are in the NYC area, there is a store called SYMS. It is sort of hit-or-miss, but you can often get name brand suits that retail in major stores for 1K for like \$400-500.

I am sure ever major city has a discount place like this if you look.....

Also..BB suits look sharp and will last years of abuse....like mentioned before, they always have sales, friends and family, etc for good deals.

Unless you're interviewing a suit is really not necessary. I've seen prospective students on their visit wearing jeans or business casual and either is perfectly acceptable.

Take a trip to Hong Kong or China in the off season (April,May,Sept,Oct,Nov) and get one made. It's the best bang for your buck.

If you have a bit more money to spend, Brooks Brothers isn't a bad choice either.

Great, I will go for business casual then.
