To avoid economic collapse, Russia must increase its GNP by 20%. However, due to the structure of its economy, if the 20% threshold is reached, then a 40% increase in GNP is achievable.

Assuming that the above statements are true, which one of the following must also be true?
(A) If ethnic strife continues in Russia, then a 20% increase in GNP will be unattainable.
(B) If a 40% increase in Russia's GNP is impossible, its economy will collapse.
(C) If Russia's GNP increases by 40%, its economy will not collapse.
(D) If the 20% threshold is reached, then a 40% increase in GNP is achievable and a 60% increase is probable.
(E) If Russia's economy collapses, then it will not have increased its GNP by 40%.

I am debating between A and D. However A seems to be a more attractive option.

(E) If Russia's economy collapses, then it will not have increased its GNP by 40%.

E - This means that there is a possibility that the RE can collapse at after 20% and between 40%. Which is not true based on the statements made in the argument - GONE
D - Does not talk about the probability of 60%. Out of Scope
C - Which means that there is a possibility that it could collapse between 20 and 40% - GONE
B - 40% increase is impossible, then there is a possibility that it could collapse between 20 and 40% - GONE
A - It says that the ethnic strife could be one reason why the economy could collapse, hence 20% is unattainable. Seems to be the BEST ANSWER

I don't think you have understood the task. If the information in this the text is true, which of the five statements must also be true.

The text says that a necessary (though perhaps not sufficient) condition for the R. economy to avoid collapse is for GNP to rise by 20%. In other words, if it doesn't rise by 20%, the economy will collapse. If it rises by 20% or more, the economy may or may not avoid collapse. Also if 20% growth is achieved, 40% will be possible.

Thus if 40% is not possible, 20% is not achieved and thus the economy will collapse

(A) If ethnic strife continues in Russia, then a 20% increase in GNP will be unattainable.

Totally unrelated

(B) If a 40% increase in Russia's GNP is impossible, its economy will collapse.

40% is only attainable if it reaches 20%, and if it doesn't reach 20% it will collapse, so this is correct.

(C) If Russia's GNP increases by 40%, its economy will not collapse.

Wrong because it is not required to reach 40%, only 20%

(D) If the 20% threshold is reached, then a 40% increase in GNP is achievable and a 60% increase is probable.

Totally unrelated.

(E) If Russia's economy collapses, then it will not have increased its GNP by 40%.

Wrong for the same reason C is wrong

We can solve this by If X, then Y logic.

Not Y, so Not X.

40% is Y.
