We need the structure - To cope with the price, company did X, Y and Z.
B) Coping with the 50 percent price plunge and laying off thousands of workers, focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only, companies used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well.
This changes the meaning of the sentence. The aim of the company is to cope with the price plunge only. This statements points that the aim is to cope with prices and lay of employees.

C is the correct option as it is parallel.
