To maintain a high demand for their product, the manufacturers first took over the marketing and sales functions previously performed by outside agents; next, they began changing their advertising campaigns monthly to keep pace with the rapid changes in consumers’ lives.

(A) they began changing
(B) this began changing
(C) the former began changing
(D) to begin changing
(E) to change

I chose C cause "the former" is more clear than just "they", (A)

I'll pick A.
' they ' clearly refers to the manufacturers and thus we don't need additional ' former '

Torn between "A" and "C". I am going with "C" as there are two entities - "manufacturers" and "outside agents". Since "manufacturers" occur first in the sentence, "former" is best suited to refer to "manufacturers".

But there's a pronoun problem in "A". "They" can refer to "manufacturers" and "outside agents". Moreover, pronouns refer to nouns that are closest to the pronouns, which is "sales agents" in this case. Hence, former is required in this case.

What's the OA for this question?
