SOLUTION

Elena receives a salary plus a commission that is equal to a fixed percentage of her sales revenue. What was the total of Elena's salary and commission last month?

(1) Elena's monthly salary is $1 ,000.
(2) Elena's commission is 5 percent of her sales revenue.

We are told that Elena receives a salary plus a commission that is equal to a fixed percentage of her sales revenue. Neither statement gives us the amount of Elena's sales, thus even taken together the statements are not sufficient.

Answer: E.

we need Elena's salary , her total sales revenue and the fixed percentage to answer this question

1) Given monthly salary is 1000, but no info of her total sales revenue nor her commission percentage, hence insuff.
2)we only know commission percentage,No info of her monthly salary, nor her total sales revenue , insuff.

we know Monthly salary, her fixed commission percentage , but we still don't know her total sales revenue , hence insuff.

Sum received by Elena = Salary + Commission
Commission = Fixed % of Sales Revenue

Statement 1

The Commission is related to Sales Revenue and therefore, it can not be calculated from the value of salary, the statement (1) is Not Sufficient.

Statement 2

The value of commission can not be calculated only from percentage figure of 5% as the data on Sales Revenue is not given.
So, statement (2) is not sufficient.

Even after combining both statement (1) and (2), the data on Sales Revenue can not be determined, the commission can not be calculated from given values of salary and percentage of commission.

Answer: (E)

Elena's income = Fixed salary + commission (as percentage of her revenue generated)

Question: Elena's Total Income = ?

Statement 1: Elena's monthly salary is $1 ,000.

it doesn't five us the second part of her income i.e. commission (as percentage of her reveneue generated) hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: Elena's commission is 5 percent of her sales revenue.

Neither sales revenue of last month is known nor her salary hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining the statements

We still don't know her revenue generated last month to calculate her commission in actual dollars hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option E
