[quote="Bunuel"]If x is 20 percent greater than 88, then x =

A. 68
B. 70.4
C. 86
D. 105.6
E. 108

X is 20% greater than 88 means X is 1.2 times 88 (in other words 88 + 20/100 * 88 = 1.2 * 88)

Therefore, X = 1.2 * 88 = 105.6

Answer should be "D"

Re: If x is 20 percent greater than 88, then x = [#permalink]
Quick way to answer:

Question says answer has to be greater than 88. So we can eliminate A,B and C.

And also we know that answer =88*1.2, which means last digit has to be 6.

So the answer is D.

Note: we cannot use this method, if it asks us to find approximate value.

Any number which is 20% greater than the number can be represented as 1.2 * number
number + 20 % of number = 1.2 * number
given number = 88
1.2 * 88 = 105.6

Convert the statement into the algebraic expression:

\(x = \frac{120 }{100} * 88 = 105.6\)
