How to Prepare: Wharton EMBA Admissions '19-20 - Only 4.5 Months Away! (An Update to our Popular Post: "How to Prepare for Wharton EMBA Admissions 2018-2019")
The Wharton EMBA program has already posted its application essays, deadlines and application online. You can get started with your 2019-2020 admissions process any time now!
The first deadline (of two) for Wharton's 2019-2020 admissions cycle is on December 4, 2019, which is currently only 4.5 months away. But, you have plenty to do to prepare for a successful admissions outcome. What should you be doing in the time you have between now and the Wharton EMBA deadline? Here are some key steps.
Revise Your Resume – Make it a Winning Admissions Resume. Make sure to revise and strengthen your resume. Don’t just send any resume in to the Admissions Committee for feedback (through its website, Wharton offers to give you feedback about whether they think you will be a good Wharton EMBA candidate). Remember, if you send your resume in for feedback, you are making a first impression – and first impressions last! Revise your resume so that it is outstanding and presents you in the best light, demonstrating strengths in the ways Wharton most values, so you can get off to a great start.
Prepare for Your Formal Interview and Class Visit. The admissions process includes a formal interview, and Wharton likes for candidates to do this interview before they submit their applications. The interview is much more than a formality. It is very important: candidates can get eliminated from consideration after the interview if things go poorly. I typically advise candidates not to schedule the formal Wharton interview until after we have worked to revise their resumes and compose at least the first essay (about career goals and why Wharton), so they understand the positioning they should take in the interview. We also want candidates to be aware of what to say and not say in the Wharton interview. Certain things, if said during the interview, can motivate the Admissions Committee to reject you. Prepare well for your interview!
Strengthen Your Record. Preparing for admissions can include building up your record academically or in the extracurricular arena, if you have weak credentials in either. Make sure to gain a solid understanding of whether you have notable weak spots in your profile and how to best address them before you submit an application.
Reach Out to Recommendation Writers. Preparation for applying involves reaching out early to recommendation writers and ensuring they compose outstanding recommendations in time for the deadline. Take the time to consider who will be the best writers for you. Who can write a glowing recommendation that conveys deep details about your strengths as a businessperson and leader? Once you decide, you should reach out to the writers, secure their commitment to write for you, and guide them about what a great recommendation looks like.
Engage with the School. Your admissions journey should also include attending information sessions or webinars and reaching out to current students and alumni members. You should demonstrate interest in the program, beyond reading the website.
Prepare for your Executive Assessment (EA) Exam or GMAT. Most candidates prefer to take the EA rather than the GMAT, since it takes significantly less time to prepare for the EA. Wharton prefers to see a score of 160 or higher on the EA, with a quant score of at least 12. (They have set this EA bar much higher than two years ago, when they indicated a score of 150 was fine.) On the GMAT, a score of 680 or higher is usually fine. (A GMAT score between 630-660 can sometimes be sufficient, depending on the strength of the candidate's work history and academic achievements; but in general, 680 or higher is much more safe.)
Drafting Winning Essays. Finally, and very importantly, you need to allot plenty of time to brainstorm and compose outstanding essays. The essays represent your marketing package, so use them excellently!

The Wharton EMBA 2019-2020 Round 1 deadline is coming up quickly. Early December may seem far off, but it is only 4.5 months away, and for Wharton's rigorous application process, there is ample work to do. Many candidates want to complete their interviews by mid-October, so it is time to begin your preparations. Good luck as you prepare to apply to this world-class institution!

Hi. Can someone get rejected if their academic credential, exam score and work experience is within Wharton's range? I.e., how can an interview go wrong? Assuming solid recommendation. Thanks!
Applicants with strong credentials get rejected all the time. I worked with a client whose credentials were above the target school's averages. Before working with me, he applied on his own and was rejected by all schools. The problem was that his values and goals were not clearly articulated nor was it clear to the adcom how will the school help him achieve those goals. Once we put together a clear strategy, he was then accepted to the program of his choice.
As to interviews, a part of being a leader involves the ability to communicate and convey ideas. The interviewer needs to see you as a part of the cohort, which means that you really need to have a good grasp of the institution, their values, and their culture. Most of the top schools also have a collaborative approach, and that could be another reason the interview could go wrong. The point is, go in truly prepared, anticipating questions you will be asked. It's helpful to have multiple mock interviews beforehand.
