I disagree, metals are commodities

What I find wrong in the sentence chioce (e) is that :

1) You cannot use like to introduce examples, it should be such as
2) I have never seen usage such as "commodities of aluminium" it sounds very awkward
3) The 3rd sentence is very wordy compared to (c)

C. commodities such as aluminum and other metals remains
E. commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains

I would choose E , the reason is

1) IF we choose C , then it means that we are giving examples of market and comparing aluminium and other metals with market, we have prepostional phrase here containing "for".
2) Whereas in E, with the additional prepositional construction "of" the comparision doesn't have any ambiguity.

The choice C actually changes the meaning of the sentence itself.

Pls feel free to correct me if i am wrong

The sentence E is structurally equivalent to saying :

The market for tropical fruits, like the fruits of orange and other citrus, remains

which just sounds awkward. I really don't think it makes for a clear comparison. Besides, I think the intention is to give example of commdities here not to make comparisons, which sentence C is doing pretty well.

As far as I see, E comes closest to the correct choice.

Please note this question is about the recycled metal industries and not about metal industries. They both are very different. The recycled industry never uses ore as its RM; they use scrap and corrupt finished but scrap metals up to as high as 95 percent of finished metals. Commodities like Aluminum or other metals or such as Aluminum and other metals are not the commodities under issue here. If the creator of this question meant ore- derived metals , then he would not have used the word’ recycled’ and ‘recycling'. Please note that recycling Industry is not the same as ore-based metal industries, which produce virgin metals.

The market for recycled commodities like aluminum and other metals remain strong despite economic changes in the recycling industry.

Now between C and E,

Quote:
C. commodities such as aluminum and other metals remains
E. commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains

C forthrightly refers to the virgin ore – mined metals despite the reference to recycling industry.
E, on the other hand, cites the recycled commodities by comparing with the (recycled) commodities of Aluminum and other metals, in which Aluminum and other metals themselves are the RM for the products.

(A) commodities like aluminum and other metals remain
(B) commodities like those of aluminum and other metals are remaining
(C) commodities such as aluminum and other metals remains
(D) commodities, such as aluminum and other metals, remain
(E) commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains

Answer is C

There are 2 very easy decision point here:-
1) Subject of the sentence is "MARKET" which is singular so will take a singular verb "REMAINS"
2) List is introduced therefore ""SUCH/SUCH AS"" will be used and not "LIKE"

(A) commodities LIKE aluminum and other metals remain :-WRONG
(B) commodities LIKE those of aluminum and other metals are remaining :- WRONG
(C) commodities such as aluminum and other metals remains:- CORRECT
(D) commodities, such as aluminum and other metals, remain:-WRONG :-
(E) commodities, LIKE the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains:- WRONG

The market for recycled commodities like aluminum and other metals remain strong despite economic changes in the recycling industry.

(A) commodities like aluminum and other metals remain - usage of like to present examples , subject-verb agreement issue
(B) commodities like those of aluminum and other metals are remaining - usage of like to present examples , tense issue
(C) commodities such as aluminum and other metals remains - Correct
(D) commodities, such as aluminum and other metals, remain - subject-verb agreement issue
(E) commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains - usage of like to present examples

My ans was D. Because to make idea more clear we must isolate specific commodities.

D is wrong because of subject verb disagreement- The market (singular) remain (plural)..... wrong.

Moreover putting a comma after commodities may imply that "aluminum and other metals" are examples of "market", not "commodities". Without the comma (as in C) the phrase "such as aluminum and other metals" unambiguously refers to "commodities" (essential modifier).

Hello experts!

In answer choice D, a user mentioned that "such as" part refers to the "market" and not the commodities. Why is this the case? Would it not refer to "commodities" because it's structurally closer?

I don't think the commas are actually an issue in (C). Like you said, the "such as..." still logically refers to the "commodities," so there's no problem there.

Luckily, (D) has a big ol' subject-verb agreement error, so we don't have to worry about the commas at all. :)

(E) commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains

This question is based on Subject-Verb agreement and Idiomatic Usage.

If we do a vertical scan of the options, we see that the last word of the underlined portion is a verb. In such cases, one point of elimination could be of either Subject-Verb agreement or Tense. Since the options give us a choice between remain, are remaining, and remains, the error is based on Subject-Verb agreement.

The subject of the verb ‘remain’ is “The market”, which is singular, so the verb must also be singular – remains. This rule helps us eliminate Options A, B, and D.

Another aspect to be considered in this sentence is the idiomatic usage of ‘such as’ and ‘like’. The phrase ‘such as’ is used to signify examples and ‘like’ is used to make a comparison between nouns or pronouns. Since in this sentence, aluminum and other metals are examples of recycled commodities, the phrase ‘such as’ would be appropriate. On this basis, we can rule out Options A, B, and E as they contain the preposition 'like'.

Thus, Option C, which contains the correct form of the verb and the correct idiomatic usage, is the most appropriate option.

Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-
bmwhype2 wrote:
The market for recycled commodities like aluminum and other metals remain strong despite economic changes in the recycling industry.

Meaning is crucial to solving this problem:
Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended meaning of the crucial part of this sentence is that aluminum and other metals are examples of recycled commodities.

Concepts tested here: Subject-Verb Agreement + Meaning + Tenses + Comparisons

• “like” is used for comparing nouns, “as” is used for comparing actions/clauses, and “such as” is used for giving examples.
• The simple present tense is used to indicate actions taking place in the current time frame, indicate habitual actions, state universal truths, and convey information that is permanent in nature.
• The simple present continuous tense is used to refer to actions that are currently ongoing and continuous in nature.

A:
1/ This answer choice incorrectly refers to the singular noun "market" with the plural verb "remain".
2/ Option A incorrectly uses "like" to introduce the examples of "aluminum" and "other metals"; remember, “like” is used for comparing nouns, “as” is used for comparing actions/clauses, and “such as” is used for giving examples.

B:
1/ This answer choice incorrectly refers to the singular noun "market" with the plural verb "are remaining".
2/ Option B incorrectly uses the simple present continuous tense verb "are remaining" to refer to an action that takes place in the current time frame; remember, the simple present tense is used to indicate actions taking place in the current time frame, indicate habitual actions, state universal truths, and convey information that is permanent in nature, and the simple present continuous tense is used to refer to actions that are currently ongoing and continuous in nature.
3/ Option B incorrectly uses "like" to introduce the examples of "those of aluminum" and "(those of) other metals"; remember, “like” is used for comparing nouns, “as” is used for comparing actions/clauses, and “such as” is used for giving examples.

C: Correct.
1/ This answer choice correctly refers to the singular noun "market" with the singular verb "remains".
2/ Option C uses the phrase "such as aluminum and other metals", conveying the intended meaning - that aluminum and other metals are examples of recycled commodities.
4/ Option C correctly uses the simple present tense verb "remains" to refer to an action that takes place in the current time frame.
3/ Option C correctly uses "such as" to introduce the examples of "aluminum" and "other metals".

D:
1/ This answer choice incorrectly refers to the singular noun "market" with the plural verb "remain".

E:
1/ This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "like the commodities of aluminum and other metals"; the construction of this phrase incorrectly implies that the commodities of aluminum and other metals are examples of recycled commodities; the intended meaning is that aluminum and other metals are examples of recycled commodities.
2. Option E incorrectly uses "like" to introduce the examples of "the commodities of aluminum" and "(the commodities of) other metals"; remember, “like” is used for comparing nouns, “as” is used for comparing actions/clauses, and “such as” is used for giving examples.

Hence, C is the best answer choice.
