It's C. Only C has no errors and doesn't distort the meaning

B is my choice. C sounds as if the roads are armed with phonograph.

I'll go for B

A, C& E Need the adverb "only" before "armed" to correctly qualify the verb "armed"
D) distorts the original meaning. Sounds like he travelled the back roads after 1905.

C) also sounds like the roads are armed.

(E) Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, in 1905 began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary, arming themselves only

b. Everything seems to fit. 'Traveling blah blah" modifies the Bela and Zoltan, and the 'In 1905' seems to modify the sentence.

OA?

B would be a better choice. In C "ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only " ethno...., travelling and hungary armed with is not right.

I am getting confused now....C might be right...the subject of sentence is
'Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály' and traveling blah blah could be a participle....

The only thing I don't like about B is the way the verb is split away from the subject with a phrase in the middle....

Hungary armed???

How can the answer be C?

I like B over C. I think the OA on the SC1000 is incorrect.

Thanks!

C

(A) Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only
-the placement of the year is awkward. OUT

(B) In 1905, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, traveling the back roads of Hungary, began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were only armed
- the closest, other than the correct one. Can't explain why it is wrong, though.

(C) In 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only
- CORRECT

(D) Having traveled the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology; they were only armed
-implies that they traveled first and then started their pioneering work. OUT

(E) Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, in 1905 began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary, arming themselves only
- again, incorrect, but I have no explanations why. OUT

B has parallelism issues with 'travelling', 'pioneering' but 'and they were only'
E changes the meaning.
I will go with C.

Per mgmat SC book,

an adverbial clause can be placed anywhere in the sentence as long as there is no confusion as to which verb it is modifying.

I liked B, but the "they" is unneccessary. So I like C better.

I think B is wrong because it changes the meaning. It sounds like "Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály were travelling the back roads in 1905 and during this exciting trip they decided to start ethnomusicology."

B also has too many commas. I have rarely seen correct sentences with that many commas.
