I will go with C.

Should have been a full stop here instead of the semi-colon

C

a - has a misplaced modifier problem. Traveling the backroads of Hungary should be followed directly by the names of the two people.

b - awkward and wordy construction - 'and they were armed'

d - changes the meaning to say that after they traveled the backroads they began their pioneering work ...

e - awkward construction - arming themselves with ...
