I think the answer could have been C as well. It depends on the meaning of the sentence.. does it mean the trees require air, degree of moisture and weather conditions of the particular forest OR does it mean it needs the soil of a particular forest and specific environmental condition of air, degree of moisture and weather conditions.

In my opinion, air , degree of moisture and weather conditions are specific environmental requirements than of a forest.

Can somebody comment on my interpretation?

That won't work, since the later items (especially the simple "air") can't be "specific environmental requirements." Those items only make sense if they are part of a list of elements in a particular forest. There's nothing specific to inherit about needing air!

That is not the issue here. Any biologist knows that the factors the question mentions are acquired ones and not inherited nor belonging to any particular place. They may even be more global than of any place, as you have suggested.

That is beside the point, however. We know we cannot go by our external knowledge in SC, however true or factual they be. When GMAT SC says something, we must go by Sentence Correction rather than by Science Correction.

I'd say the science and the grammar align, as they should on any well-written question. It's just that we don't need to know much science to find the answer.

Isn't in Option E particular is modifying soil. We have two noun forest and soil . In this case particular needs to refer to soli because forest is in possessive form.

Can someone tell me to which nouns, adjectives can describe if noun is possessive.

Example in below question: particular forest's soil, here particular refers to forest or soil?
