1) In the tournament, Team X scored more than twice as many points as Team Y.

2) The championship was decided after five games.

Ok. Let's approach this from, for the lack of a better word, a non-algebraic approach.

Two teams, X and Y, played against each other in a tournament for the championship. In the tournament the team that scored the greater number of points in a game won that game. If the first team to win 4 games became the champion, did Team X become the champion?

Statement A: In the tournament, Team X scored more than twice as many points as Team Y.

We don't know how the scores are "Spread" for the game. For example, if there were 5 games (and i choose this number because it is already provided in Statement B, since I want to kill two birds in one go, you could choose any number), Team X could have won just one and scored 20 points in that game(and Y scoring 0). Team Y could have won the other 4 games, scoring 2 points each in those games (and Team X could have scored 0 in those 4 games each) for a total tally of 8 points. Tally of Team X would be 20. So the statement is satisfied but this could be the other way around as well. So we cannot decide if Team X won the championship or not.

Hence Insufficient

Statement 2: The championship was decided after five games. Clearly Insufficient.

We already took 5 and saw how we still can't decide so even together both the statements are Insufficient.

1) In the tournament, Team X scored more than twice as many points as Team Y.

If Team X scored 40 points compared to Team Y's 20 points, we can't
be sure which team wins the tournament.

Imagine these scenarios
Team X wins 4-1
Game 1: 6-5 | Game 2: 7-8 | Game 3: 12-3 | Game 4: 10-1 | Game 5: 5-3

Team Y wins 4-1
Game 1: 5-6 | Game 2: 7-8 | Game 3: 0-4 | Game 4: 28-1 | Game 5: 0-1 (Insufficient)

2) The championship was decided after five games.

Again both the scenarios are possible
Team X wins 4-1
Game 1: 6-5 | Game 2: 7-8 | Game 3: 12-3 | Game 4: 10-1 | Game 5: 5-3

Team Y wins 4-1
Game 1: 5-6 | Game 2: 7-8 | Game 3: 0-4 | Game 4: 28-1 | Game 5: 0-1 (Insufficient)

Combining the information given in the statements don't give us any new information. (Insufficient - Option E)

Given: In the tournament the team that scored the greater number of points in a game won that game. The first team to win 4 games became the champion

Target question: Did team X become the champion?

When I SCAN the two statements, they both feel insufficient, AND I’m pretty sure I can identify some cases with conflicting answers to the target question. So, I’m going to head straight to……

Statements 1 and 2 combined
There are several values of scenarios that satisfy BOTH statements. Here are two:
Case a: Team X wins first game 100-0, and then team Y wins each of the next 4 games (1-0). So, Team X's total points = 100, and Team Y's total points = 4. This meets both Statements 1 and 2. In this case, the answer to the target question is Team X did NOT win the championship
Case b: Team Y wins first game 1-0, and then team X wins each of the next 4 games (1-0). So, Team X's total points = 4, and Team Y's total points = 1. This meets both Statements 1 and 2. In this case, the answer to the target question is Team X DID win the championship
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, the combined statements are NOT SUFFICIENT
