BAD BASIC ARITHMETIC is throwing me off. When I say bad arithmetic I mean things that are out of my control.

For example, I just got a layup wrong because I used 64 as the number for 36*2

Obviously 36*2 is 72, but I try to work so fast that sometimes my brain uses wrong numbers for simple math operations and I get the entire question wrong.

I'm not even sure if this is possible to fix.....

Has anyone else had a similar experience and was able to overcome it ?

Its as if my brain saw the 36 visually, but treated it mentally as 32.

I don't know how this is fixable... ugh. It's like you're looking at the color green but your brain is seeing blue.

perhaps taking your brain out of equation? :-)

Also, try to make sure you don't do this again (36*2 = 72). Once you make a few of these and feel pretty silly, you need to move slower and don't just try to blaze through it. Slow down a bit.

This happens to me too! I am trying the following
1) Before I start any test/question bank I remind myself to be very careful and pay very close attention.
2) Spend a couple of seconds after a question to check my calculations
3) And like BB said, remembering to slow down(esp during the calculations)
Please let me know if you think of any other strategy. Thanks.
