United Investments’ management has decided to upgrade its mainframe computer servers to the newly developed flash-memory processors (FMPs) instead of purchasing new models of its existing technology, in order to significantly reduce its maintenance costs. FMP computers have simpler, more reliable processors, and their average operational span is substantially longer.

Which of the following would be most useful in assessing whether the bank management’s decision will reduce the company’s maintenance costs?

The main frame i.e the main point here is to determine whether the above decision is actually reducing the maintenance cost. Lets go through the answer choices

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.- Incorrect, the passage states that the the processor's operational span is considerably higher and they are more reliable hence we don't have to worry about their operational span
(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.- Correct. This could really hit the maintainance cost if the energy efficiency is longer than the new models of existing technology. hence this is a factor management must take into consideration.
(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.- Irrelevant . We are not concerned about the manufacturers manufacturing the old models, we are concerned whether replacing the old models with newly developed FMPS will reduce the maintenance cost
(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.- Irrelevant. This decision is for next year and is not elping in determining the existing decision taken by the management to Upgrade its computers with FMPS than purchasing new models of existing technology.
(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems. - Irrelevant. we are not concerned with the other banks here.

(

B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.Correct.Naturally if FMP computers have higher efficiency than that of new models of existing processors then bank management's decision is correct that it will reduce the mainteance cost.

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.Incorrect.We are nowhere concerned with older technology.

(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.Incorrect.Purchasing next year doesn't relate to the management's decision

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems. Incorrect. We are not concerned about what other banks are doing.

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.
Incorrect. Anyway, it will increase future maintenance costs

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.
Correct. Energy efficiency computers can cause the reduce in Company's maintenance costs.

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.
Incorrect. It doesn't talk about improving efficiencies of manufacturers' servers.

(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.
Incorrect. It will cause an increase in maintenance costs.

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems.
Incorrect. Talks about other banks. No sense.

The answer choice is B.

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology. - [color=#00a651]See if the statement is negated than how the conclusion is shattered, well, if it is not the case that FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology, then the bank management’s decision will reduce the company’s maintenance costs will no longer hold true as the operational span is not longer compared to the new models of existing technology, then the bank management need to replace multiple time or more cost in being involved in the maintenance activities of these FMP processors rather than if the have opted for the new models of its existing technology. - CORRECT

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors. - Who cares about the energy efficiency, we are concerned about the maintenance cost, DISCARD
(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well - No where in line with the argument, if they produce & market older technology servers, we don't know exactly how well they performs , neither we have any information regarding the cost of these.
(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities - No idea, may be or may not be, it is not in scope of the argument.
(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems. - Same as D, DISCARD

IMO answer is A:

If the operational span of FMP processors is substantially longer than MF processors, then it is a good choice, if not then the company might need to buy these again, thereby adding costs.
Choice B is rejected because it mentions FMP computers instead of processors, this is not mentioned in the argument. so eliminated.
C,D and E are out of scope

FMP computers have simpler, more reliable processors, and their average operational span is substantially longer.

Premises

-United Investments’ management has decided to upgrade its mainframe computer servers vs purchasing new models
-FMP computers have simpler, more reliable processors, and their average operational span is substantially longer.

Conclusion

- to significantly reduce its maintenance costs

So, here is some sort of assumption that maintenance costs are going to be reduced by some of the characteristics of FMP's computers.

Which of the following would be most useful in assessing whether the bank management’s decision will reduce the company’s maintenance costs?

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology. - irrelevant operational span not related to maintenance costs
(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors. - energy efficiency is also irrelevant.
(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well. this one is interesting, because if computer manufacturers are not producing and marketing servers, we can expect that maintenance costs are going to raise as a conseguence
(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.intention of buying more servers, irrelevant.
(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems. other banks, irrelevant

So (C) is our answer.

Bank Management's Decision: United Investments’ management has decided to upgrade its mainframe computer servers to the newly developed flash-memory processors (FMPs) instead of purchasing new models of its existing technology, in order to significantly reduce its maintenance costs.

Which of the following would be most useful in assessing whether the bank management’s decision will reduce the company’s maintenance costs?

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.
Long operational span does not necessarily reduce maintenance costs. Incorrect

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.
If the answer is Yes, then bank management's decision is correct and the decision will reduce maintenance costs.
If the answer is No, then bank management's decision is incorrect and the decision will not reduce maintenance costs. Correct

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.
This statement also does not relate to company's maintenance costs . Incorrect

(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.
This statement also does not relate to company's maintenance costs . Incorrect

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems.

The answer is D.

A- longer operational span does not say anything about maintenance costs

B- energy efficiency is not relevant to maintenance costs

C- fully out of scope. They manufacture the old version or not. We are talking about new FMP tech

D- correct. If more machines are night, the maintenance cost per machine will go down but in total, may go up

E- does not matter what others banks do

As per prethinking we are looking for an answer which could help us evaluate that purchasing FMP won't lead to any additional cost, hence adding to maintenance costs and losing the purpose.

Choice A is the right answer. If operational span of FMP is less then this could lead to additional maintenance cost.
Hence A

Analysis:
======
Bank decided to upgrade existing computers instead of buying the new one.
Aim --> reduce cost
The benefit of upgrade --> simple, reliable processor, long time span.

prethink
=======
any option that would either show the advantage or disadvantage of upgrading existing computers.

A - time span is already more so significantly more does not make strengthen or weaken.
B - hold, on the line of prethinking, disadvantage of upgrading.
C,D,E - out of scope --> no way strengthing or weaking the argument.

Hence, B is the answer.

D IMO

If bank buys more servers next year than its maintenance cost will go up for sure, may become even more than what it currently incurs.

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.
Irrelevant. We dont need to compare these two, just need to know about FMP's maintenance cost

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.
Energy efficiency will impact operations cost not maintenace

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.
Out of scope

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems.
Out of scope. Doesnt matter what other banks are doing.

con: mgmt will upgrade mainframe to new FMP instead of buying NEW MODELS => to REDUCE maintenance costs
prem: FMPs are simpler, reliable and have a longer life span
asum: that the info in the premise will reduce maintenance costs <= evaluate the premise vs NEW

b-does HE efficiency result in + or - main $, not stated;
c-irrelevant;
d-the argument is about upgrading to FMP vs buying NEW…;
e-irrelevant;

Answer (A): if FMP life span is longer then NEW, then the argument stands (reduced main$), if FMP life span is NOT longer than NEW, then the arguement falls.

A is the only choice related to maintenance.

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.
Correct: Although the life span of the computer as a whole is longer, the processor, which is a crucial part for its performance and is the main reason for UI to upgrade, is what really matters. If the processor's lifespan is longer, this will ensure a lower maintenance cost for the company.

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.
Irrelevant! : FMP is save energy cost, but it is relevant to the main concern, which is the maintenance (what if the maintenance is way costly compared with the saved energy cost?)

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technoloy as well.
Irrelevant!: Even if a company stopped producing a product, this don't mean that the maintenance cost will decrease or increase. Besides, after the increase in the maintenance cost of the old one, the new one may still be more costly.

(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.
Out of scope!: Future purchase has no effect on the maintenance cost, which is our focus.

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems.
Irrelevant!: What is suitable for other banks may not be suitable for us. Besides, we can't be sure that decisions made by other banks were correct.

Summary - UI’s management has decided to upgrade its MCS to new FMPs instead of buying new MCS - to significantly reduce its maintenance costs. FMP computers have simpler, more reliable processors, and their average operational span is substantially longer.

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology. - Incorrect, it is already provided in the question stem as substantially longer
(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors. Correct, This will be a key factor that affects long term maintenance costs
(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well. Will not be useful as this has no bearing on the maintenance cost
(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities. Will not be useful as this has no bearing on the maintenance cost
(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems. Will not be useful as this has no bearing on the maintenance cost of UI Company

IMO-D

Passage Brief:

UIM - Already using MF (Mainframe) Computers- Decided to upgrade to FMP's (flash-memory processors) - Instead of Purchasing new models of MF computers.
Objective- Significant reduction in Maintenance cost.
FPM Computers advantages- Simpler, More Reliable processors, Longer average operational span

Statement that help access the bank management’s decision to reduce the company’s maintenance costs

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.---Incorrect--longer Operational spam does not relate to maintenance. what if operational spam is longer but frequency of maintenance is also higher. in that case maintenance cost will increase..

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.---Incorrect---- Efficiency is not a concern. Upgradation is for the purpose of reduction in maintenance cost. What if FMP are more efficient in their work but prone to more breakdown.

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.-Incorrect---- Whether they serve or not is out of scope of the passage.

(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.---Correct---In the first year management decided to purchase FMP's computers. if in next year they decide to switch back to MF's computers that simply mean that FMP's computers did not serve the purpose. this will help access the company's maintenance decision.

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems. -Incorrect----We are concerned with UIM bank , whether other bank purchased or not is out of scope.

United Investments’ management has decided to upgrade its mainframe computer servers to the newly developed flash-memory processors (FMPs) instead of purchasing new models of its existing technology, in order to significantly reduce its maintenance costs

THIS IS THE CONCLUSION ,REMAINING IS PREMISE

THEN WE HAVE

LETS GO TO POE

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.

This looks correct ? as energy efficiency can be factor for Maitaunace cost !!

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.

Irrevelant

(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.

Irrevelant

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems.

Irrevelant too.

B it is

A can look close but is wrong.

Operational.span has nothing to.do with maintaimace cost

The stimulus states that the company decided to upgrade its mainframe computer servers to the newly developed flash-memory processors (FMPs) instead of purchasing new models of its existing technology in order to reduce maintenance costs.

Option A: repeats what was in the stimulus that the FMP processors have longer operational span. This in itself does not tell us whether there is cost savings. INCORRECT

Option B: This option says there is greater energy efficiency which will in turn save cost. CORRECT

Option C: This does not give us anything to indicate there will be cost savings. INCORRECT

Option D: This looks like out of scope. INCORRECT

Option E: This also looks like out of scope. INCORRECT

Hence answer choice B.

The bank's argument is that upgrading to FMP's will reduce its maintenance cost. We need to check which evaluation validates that the bank's plan will work

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.
We just need to know whether or not FMP's are better than mainframe servers in terms of maintenance. Out of scope - Eliminated

(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors.
We are not concerned about energy efficiency here - Eliminated

(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.
Out of scope - Eliminated

(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities.
If yes, it is counterproductive to the bank's plan. If no, then this works - Keep

(E) Whether other banks in its market recently upgraded their computing systems.
Out of scope - Eliminate

Answer is (D)

Pre thniking: Management has decided to upgrade its mainframe computers servers to newly developed flash memory processors instead of purchasing new models
it is debated that FMP have more operational efficiency, we need to find a logical gap which will question the or breaks the conclusion as it is evaluate question

(A) Whether FMP processors’ operational span is significantly longer than that of new models of existing technology.- if we say yes, it will strengthen conclusion or if we say no, it will negate conclusion-correct-OA
(B) Whether FMP computers have higher energy efficiency than that of new models of the existing processors. -we are concerned about operational span
(C) Whether mainframe computer manufacturers still produce and market servers that are based on the older technology as well.-irrelevant
(D) Whether the bank's management intends to purchase more mainframe servers next year, in order to expand its capabilities. -out of scope , do not address our conclusion
