My technique (not my grammar knowledge):

A and B are out because of being (it is high probability that being answers are wrong. Not always, but most of them). We have C, D and E left. D is comparing Acanthus to Tom's wedding, which is obviously wrong. C - the structure is not parallel:

Achantus:
-whose wedding was sparsely attended
-and he was married in a low profile community church

Better to use who than he. So, E is correct one.

why had after tom is correct? is it because if a sentence uses simple present first them second sentence becomes past prefect?

Correct idiomatic usage of Unlike is : Unlike X, Y

Correct answer will hence be (E) , errors in other options highlighted in RED..

My credo: one percent wrong is 100 percent wrong at least in GMAT SC. Let's try to solve this topic in the following way.

We know for certain that the comparator 'unlike' indicates that Acanthus should be compared with Tom and not with Tom's any \thing else. Therefore, I am not even going to touch choices A, B, and D with a barge pole.

Between C and E, a basic knowledge of sentence structure will reveal that C is a blatant fragment with the first part being just a noun phrase and unparallel with its counterpart after 'and' which is a clause.

If I were taking GMAT, I would close my eyes and click on E

Disclaimer: be sure that there is at least 1 percent wrong in the rejected choices.

A, B & D out .... as Acanthus is compared with possessive Tom's.
C... out as whose wedding was sparsely attended ( passive) not ll he was married in a low profile community church(active)
E is the best choice.
