C. Small amounts if alcohol increase more neurogenesis, whereas larger amounts decrease it
D. As compared to larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol
E. compared with larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol

How can C be correct. It makes no sense
‘Small amounts if alcohol increase’ it makes no sense.
D and E cannot be the answers as it gives missing and wrong information
A does not make any sense
and B has the same problems as C.
Is ‘if’ written in B and C a typo??

The original sentence wants to reflect that: "large amounts of alcohol decrease neurogenesis, but small amounts of alcohol increase it". For this meaning,

A is not right because the subject in the main clause should be the same implied subject in the Unlike clause. "Small amounts of alcohol" is not the right subject.
B and C are NOT complete sentence. Subject is "small amounts", then where is the verb for this subject.
E is not parallel, neurogenesis is compared with larger amounts.
D is so vague (and I believe it is not really right), but because others are SO WRONG, I then choose D.

Yet, I highly believe there is a typo in B and C. If C changes into "Small amounts OF alcohol increase more neurogenesis, whereas larger amounts decrease it", then C matches the intended meaning perfectly.

I think in option b and C , there is a typo, instead of 'Small amounts IF' it should be 'Small amounts OF'.

C is incorrect.
1. Typo in the sentence
2. Increase more is redundant

I think the answer should be D. In C, increase more is redundant.

In essence, the sentence is trying to convey that large amounts of alcohol decreases neurogenesis whereas small amounts of alcohol increases nuerogenesis.

This question can best be solved by POE.

A- The modifier "Unlike decreased by larger amounts"... needs to follow up by neurogenesis. What is decreased by larger amounts? Neurogensis or "small amounts" as this option is stating? Incorrect

B- the modifier "as compared to larger amounts" seems to be modifying "neurogenesis", which leads to an illogical comparison. Incorrect

C- Not the best of the best answer because of the redunancy (increase more) but gets the comparison right. Usage of "it" is also correct.

D- The modifier "As compared to larger amounts" is modifying "neurogenesis", which again leads to an illogical comparison. Incorrect.

E- The modifier "Compared with larger amounts" is modifying "neurogenesis", which again leads to an illogical comparison. Incorrect.

Hence, option C

B. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, as compared to larger amounts
C. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, whereas larger amounts decrease it
D. As compared to larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol
E. compared with larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol

has to be C

A. Unlike decreased by larger amounts, small amounts of alcohol increase neurogenesis - Wrong comparison
B. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, as compared to larger amounts - Comparison not clear / Larger amounts of what? (GMAT usually makes it crystal clear)
C. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, whereas larger amounts decrease it - GOOD
D. As compared to larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol - Comparing Larger amount with Neurogenesis ?
E. compared with larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol - same as above

The phrase in red is redundant at best and nonsensical at worst.
None of the answer choices is viable.
I would ignore this SC.

Unlike decreased by larger amounts, small amounts of alcohol increase neurogenesis.

A. Unlike decreased by larger amounts, small amounts of alcohol increase neurogenesis -- Incorrect because Like/Unlike is used to compare noun entity. Here decrease is compared with small amounts.

B. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, as compared to larger amounts -- Incorrect because it changes the meaning. It doesn't say what large amount will do. Whether it will increase or decrase.

C. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, whereas larger amounts decrease it -- Correct It retains the original meaning and retains the parallelism also.

D. As compared to larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol -- Incorrect, same as B
E. compared with larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol -- Incorrect, same as B

In this sentence "Unlike" the marks the presence of a contrast, the two elements being compared are as follows:
Element1: decreased by larger amounts
Element2: small amounts of alcohol increase neurogenesis.

This is clearly neither the logically nor grammatically parallel contrast. Thus the sentence is incorrect

A. Unlike decreased by larger amounts, small amounts of alcohol increase neurogenesis- Incorrect
B. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, as compared to larger amounts- Incorrect. This choice sets up nonsensical comparison as follows:Small amounts of alcohol increases more neurogenesis than it increases larger amounts
C. Small amounts of alcohol increase more neurogenesis, whereas larger amounts decrease it- This choice correctlypresents the contrast. Small amounts increase neurogenesis but larger amounts decrease neurogenesis
D. As compared to larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol- Incorrect. Usage "As + compared + to" is wrong, it should be "compared + to". Also this choice sets up nonsensical comparison as follows:Small amounts of alcohol increases more neurogenesis than it increases larger amounts.
E. compared with larger amounts, neurogenesis is increased by small amounts of alcohol- This choice sets up nonsensical comparison as follows:Small amounts of alcohol increases more neurogenesis than it increases larger amounts
