Unlike most other mergers in the utility industry, which have been driven by the need to save money and extend companies' service areas, the merger of the nation's leading gas and electric company is intended to create a huge marketing network for the utilities in question with states opening their utility markets to competition.

A. and electric company is intended to create a huge marketing network for the utilities in question with states opening
B. and electric companies are intended to create a huge network for marketing the utilities in question as states open
C. and electric companies are intended to create a huge network that will be marketing the utilities in question, with states opening
D. company and electric company are intending to create a huge marketing network for the utilities in question, with states opening
E. company and leading electric company is intended to create a huge network for marketing the utilities in question as states open

I will choose E.

1. merger "is". So, B, C and D are out.
2. The leading gas company and leading electric company - two different companies are needed for a merger. A makes it look like one compant (leading gas and electric company)
3. "as states open" seems correct.
E - the merger is intended to create a huge network with states opening market (looks like the states opening market is mandatory and coordinates for creating a network)
A - the merger is intended to create a huge network as states "open" market

E

In A:
gas and electric company
incorrect. should be companies. moreover introducing clause with "as" in E is better than prepositional phrase begginning "with" in A.

I eliminated A because company should be plural and not singular :

what is correct between " merger [...] gas and electric company is " and "merger [...] gas and electric companies is "

howcome D is correct???
the merger(sub)(singular) + are (verb)(plural) = wrong sentence
choices are either A or E
as states open makes better sense than with states opening
nation's leading gas and electric company seems one company only , however the sentence talks about THE MERGER OF ( which has to be of ONE COMPANY TO ANOTHER)
IMO E....

A. and electric company is intended to create a huge marketing network for the utilities in question with states opening ------ wrong because, if the gas and electric company were one entity, there is no question of a merger with another company. One cannot defend that it is merger between two divisions within the company. The text is not saying so

B. and electric companies are intended to create a huge network for marketing the utilities in question as states open ---- are intended is plural ---wrong

C. and electric companies are intended to create a huge network that will be marketing the utilities in question, with states opening--- same as in B

D. company and electric company are intending to create a huge marketing network for the utilities in question, with states opening ----same as in B

E. company and leading electric company is intended to create a huge network for marketing the utilities in question as state’s open --- The best option; the merger is between two entities and there is no SV error an

the subject 'merger' should have a singular verb 'is'. This leaves us with A and E.

I will choose A against E - because, 'with states opening' sure makes more meaningful sense compared to 'as states open'

A is right. E is redunant with company being mentinoed twice.

I understand the usage of 'is'. That way, I could narrow it down to 2 choices.

Is the use of the word 'company' twice sufficient to eliminate E.?
Somebody pls explain the usage of 'with' in option A and
'as' in option E.

This one is a toughie.........cant decide between A and E........

Is not using the word "company" twice the only error in A or are there any other errors......

My choice is E.

In B/C/E the merger of .... A and B are is incorrect.

In A "in question with " sounds as though the utilities are in question with states.

I am not sure if you underlined the correct sentence fragment nakib. If it is indeed correct I would go for A, since it is the only one which makes sense.

I think the "and" before the already underlined part is also underlined. Assuming this, I will got with E. Else its A.

E is the best because there is subject/verb agreement and because the sentence makes sense.

Yes D seems incorrect to me as well. It should be IS not are. Moreover, are intending is even more awkword in the sentence. E seems correct to me as in A merger of Nation's leading gas and elecric company is not possible with itself. No other company has been mentioned in A.
