Unlike the original National Museum of Science and Technology in Italy, where the models are encased in glass or operated only by staff members, the Virtual Leonardo Project, an online version of the museum, encourages visitors to “touch” each exhibit, which thereby activates the animated functions of the piece.

A. exhibit, which thereby activates
B. exhibit, in turn an activation of
C. exhibit, and it will activate
D. exhibit and thereby activate
E. exhibit which, as a result, activates

B

"which" is wrong to modify exhibit, A/E out
C:"it" has no clear referent

between B and D, really hard to choose
feel more comfortable to add "to" before "activate" in D.
So only B left

A. exhibit, which thereby activates
B. exhibit, in turn an activation of
C. exhibit, and it will activate
D. exhibit and thereby activate
E. exhibit which, as a result, activates

D is the best

encourage A to do B and (to) do C: is correct

Hi mates,

IMO C

A out: for me it's the fact of touching the exhibit what activates the function, not the exhibit itself.
B out: for me it sounds wordy: "in turn an activation of"
D out: same reason as in A, and alse activate is in plural instead of singular
E out same reason as in A

OA and Source?

Cheers

I'll go with E.

'which' is not modifying exhibit because the ',' is removed.

D, I think, changes the meaning slightly

A. exhibit, which thereby activates - it is not exhibit that activates....
B. exhibit, in turn an activation of - incomplete sentence....
C. exhibit, and it will activate - it is not museum that activates....
D. exhibit and thereby activate - the best
E. exhibit which, as a result, activates- it is not exhibit that activates....

I think "each" is wrongly underlined as it does not appear in option A.

mmm I think I don't get it

If D, the two possibilities:

· the Virtual Leonardo Project encourages visitors to "touch" [..] and thereby (to) activate, in other words: visitors are encouraged to touch and to activate

or

· the Virtual Leonardo Project encourages visitors to "touch" [..] and thereby visitors activate, i.e. the subject of activate is visitors

Which option is the right one?

Why is A wrong?

Hi, two quick rules to remember about the word "which:"
1. "Which" refers to the nearest noun phrase before it (basically the nearest thing).
So, in this case, "which" refers to the closest noun before it: "exhibit." But then the sentence would say that the exhibit "thereby activates the animated functions..." That's not true; the exhibit does not activate the functions, the visitor does.

2. "Which" is a pronoun, so it can only be used to replace a noun; it can not be used to replace a verb.
So, "which" can not replace "to touch" because "to touch" is a verb and can not be referred to by a pronoun. (if maybe you assumed that the act of touching activated the functions).

For both reasons, A can't be the answer.

Hope that helps.

The answer has to be (E).

1. It is the exhibit that activates animated functions of the piece.
2. I dont think the use of "thereby" with Which is "logical."

D because it correctly refers to the act of touching rather than the object "exhibit"

E is redundant

I believe the usage of which is correct because it is not preceded by a comma, but the way it is worded would already imply that it is a result, making the use of "as a result" redundant.

I am still confused. Is sentence trying to say : Visitors activate the animated functions or their action(touching)?

A. exhibit, which thereby activates =>exhibit activates?
B. exhibit, in turn an activation of => the use of a noun is wordy
C. exhibit, and it will activate => it refers to what?
D. exhibit and thereby activate => correct
E. exhibit which, as a result, activates => same as A

I'd liek clarification on why for answer choice C, the antecedent "it" can't be "exhibit". Although that would still be wrong because of parallelism and some logic, the OG answer explanation also says "it" has no antecedent because "touch" is a verb.

what if C was

"exhibit, and it will activate itself"

still not the best answer, but grammatically correct no?

OA is D. I think it's a OG10 question.

Think of the parallelism - To Touch & therby Activate. Remember that: One thought on parallelism eliminates'em All

You were right. First I decided for A but afterwards realised that it is completely wrong.

IMHO,

It is the infinitive "to touch" that "which" modifies.

Meaning wise touch should activate.........

So, IMO I have an inclination for (E).However, the OA is (D).

Experts opinion plz

Hi TGC

According to Manhattan GMAT, sentence correction, page 86.
Which is relative pronoun that must modify things (noun or noun phrase)
Hence, "which" cannot modify the infinitive "to touch".

Hope it helps.

Hi pqhai,

In the same Guide (MGMAT SC) it is mentioned that "infinitive" has three functions:

(1). Noun
