Re: V11-15 [#permalink]
Hi team, while I marked the correct choice I'm confused about choice E.
I thought it was incorrect because it repeated the noun "high frequency sounds":

the males of a certain group of crickets call female crickets to them using high frequency sounds, rather than low frequency ones, and using high frequency sounds similar to that of a predator such as a bat.

The parallelism seems corrects, but the meaning is awkward, so a noun modifier should be better. Why a fragment sentence is mentioned?

Regards.

GMATNinja ChiranjeevSingh -

Could you please help me understand the difference between " to them using high frequency sounds, " and " to them by using high frequency sounds," ?

Can we use either of the two - "using" or "by using" ?

In the context of this question , I think this as -

Using - the males have the ability themselves to create high frequency sounds

By using - the males have to use something to create high frequency sounds. It is unclear here if the creation of high frequency sounds is done by the males themselves , or if they use something else to create high frequency sounds.

Thanks

how does the word 'high' complete the remaining sentence correctly?

Please note this portion of the sentence in option E :- "....frequency ones, and using high..". We use comma + and to denote a series such as X, Y , and Z. Since there is no series here , hence using is comma + and is not right. Hence, option E is wrong. Hope it helps. Bunuel
