Hi,

Just a little confused as the option mentioned 3mn people annually, however the passage says over 3 years.

Thanks,

The Berlin Airlift forced the Soviets to call off their blockade in 1949

In RC, the correct answer should be 100% correct.
Option E and C are one of the best trap answers playing with the language, comprehension, and attention-to-detail.

Option E:
    Excerpt from the passage:
      This effort, known as the Berlin Airlift, lasted for more than a year and delivered more than 2.3 million tons of food, fuel and other goods to West Berlin. The Soviets called off the blockade in 1949.

    The passage suggests only the order of events.
      X: The Berlin airlift happened
      Y: The Soviets called off the blockade
      Just because X happened before Y does NOT imply that X ----causes---> Y

Option C:
    Excerpt from the passage:
      After a decade of relative calm, tensions flared again in 1958.

    Essentially, it means that the decade was RELATIVELY calm as compared to the earlier blockade period.
    Relative calmness does NOT imply that there was no hostility. It states that the situation was relatively smoother/calmer than before.

Official Solution:

    The existence of West Berlin, a conspicuously capitalist city deep within communist East Germany, "stuck like a bone in the Soviet throat," as Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev put it! The Russians began maneuvering to drive the United States, Britain and France out of the city for good. In 1948, a Soviet blockade of West Berlin aimed to starve the western Allies out of the city. Instead of retreating, however, the United States and its allies supplied their sectors of the city from the air. This effort, known as the Berlin Airlift, lasted for more than a year and delivered more than 2.3 million tons of food, fuel and other goods to West Berlin. The Soviets called off the blockade in 1949.

    After a decade of relative calm, tensions flared again in 1958. For the next three years, the Soviets emboldened by the successful launch of the Sputnik satellite the year before and embarrassed by the seemingly endless flow of refugees from east to west (nearly 3 million in the decade since the end of the blockade, many of them young skilled workers such as doctors, teachers and engineers) blustered and made threats, while the Allies resisted. Summits, conferences and other negotiations came and went without resolution. Meanwhile, the flood of refugees continued. In June 1961, some 19,000 people left the GDR through Berlin. The following month, 30,000 fled. In the first 11 days of August, 16,000 East Germans crossed the border into West Berlin, and on August 12 some 2,400 followed the largest number of defectors ever to leave East Germany in a single day.

Which of the following is supported by the passage?

A. Around 300,000 people on average left East Germany annually in the decade following the blockade
B. August 1961 recorded the largest number of monthly defectors to have left East Germany in a month
C. There was no hostility in West Berlin between 1949 and 1958
D. Doctors, teachers, and engineers wanted to defect because there were more opportunities for young skilled workers in the west in 1959-61
E. The Berlin Airlift forced the Soviets to call off their blockade in 1949

The passage states "nearly 3 million in the decade since the end of the blockade, many of them young skilled workers such as doctors, teachers and engineers" - this means about 300,000 people left every year on an average during the decade after the blockade.

A is not 100% supported. While option A mentions, "Around 300,000 people on average left East Germany annually in the decade following the blockade", passage provides information limited to such flight of refugees from East to the West. The actual average number may or may not be higher, and the passage is silent on that.

Answer: A

I assumed A was incorrect because of the language used. Can the word "following X" not mean "since the inception of X", rather than explicitly meaning "after the end of X"?

For example - "Following the transfer ban imposed by UEFA, Chelsea was unable to buy players in the transfer window." This would mean that the transfer ban came into the picture and as a result, Chelsea was unable to make a signing (this wouldn't mean that Chelsea was unable to make a signing after the transfer ban ended).

Can you please help in pointing out the flaw in the logic here?

The average would be total divided by the number of years. Since the passage says: (nearly 3 million in the decade since the end of the blockade, many of them young skilled workers such as doctors, teachers and engineers) blustered and made threats....) the passage does say that 3 million over 10 years or 300,000 per year on average left. Whether that means 1 left during the first 9 years and then 2,999,999 left on the last day of the last year, we really do not care. The average still holds.

Hi. I think you are bringing up a good point and it would be confusing in another situation. When you have an event that lasts for a while, the statement following can refer to both the start and the end of that event. Similarly "After blockade" or "before blockade" could mean either before the start or the end of the event. However, usually, "following" and "after" would refer to the END of the event. Such as "after the Industrial Revolution" or "Following the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War,[8] the French government was deeply in debt." Remember the correct answer is not always the perfect answer that fits the glove (that's the definition of an EASY question) but rather the one that is more right than the others. Similarly in SC, you may not have a perfect sentence but it will be gramatically correct and thus OK.

June = 19,000 left
July = 30,000 left
August (till 12th day of the month) = 16,000+2400=18,400

We do not know anything about how many people left in the rest of August, so we cannot say if the total number was greater than 30,000 or not.
