Clear communication is one of the key ingredients that are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is, however, rare for people from disparate backgrounds to spend their lives together.

(A) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is, however, rare for people from disparate backgrounds to spend their lives together.

(B) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare that people from disparate backgrounds spend their lives together.

(C) is often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare for people from disparate backgrounds to spend their lives together.

(D) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is, however, rare that people backgrounds spend their lives together.

(E) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare for people from disparate backgrounds to share their lives together.

1.One of the + sub(plural)+ verb(singular)
2.One of the+ sub (plural)+that/who+verb (plural)

Check the original sentence.
'Clear communication is one of the...that is'

We need to use plural verb'are'

I have a query regarding usage of "that" v/s "for" in a sentence.

through POE, I came down to option B and E.

In options B and E, the main difference is usage of that vs for and spend vs share.

I dont consider Spend v/s share to be big but i think for v/s that is common gmat. Could you please shed some light on why B is correct and E is not?

1. To express an action or an explanation, we need to use 'that'
2. To express a noun or noun phrase, need to use other preposition such as 'of,about and for etc.

(B) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare that people from disparate backgrounds spend their lives together

Look at the colored portion. It expresses an action of people, so it's better to use 'that'.

(E) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare for people from disparate backgrounds to share their lives together.

Just look at that portion. It's a big noun phrase. Id we use just a preposition 'for' to express this big noun phrase, it will be tough to understand. Moreover, the action of the people can be easily expressed through using 'that'


Actually. both options are grammatically correct. But option B is more appropriate and clear than option E :)

The most important red spot in this question is the redundancy of although and however. One can easily remove A and D instantly.

It does not take much to dismiss C for its obvious S-V agreement error.

Share their lives together is not the intended meaning. One can see the redundancy in sharing and together.

B is the correct answer.

No need to go all over the world for this simple question

(B) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare that people from disparate backgrounds spend their lives together. -> No errors as such. Let's keep it.

(C) is often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare for people from disparate backgrounds to spend their lives together. -> one of the key ingredients need plural verb. Incorrect.

(D) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is, however, rare that people backgrounds spend their lives together. -> same as A. Incorrect.

(E) are often lacking in romantic relationships and although positive intent between partners is a given, it is rare for people from disparate backgrounds to share their lives together. -> share and together are redundant. Incorrect.

So, I think B. :)
