My reasoning:

A) INCORRECT, The verb needs to agree to the subject. In this case was is singular but refers to the plural subject style and methods.

B) CORRECT

C) INCORRECT, The verb needs to agree to the subject. In this case has is singular but refers to the plural subject style and methods.

D) INCORRECT, The use of past perfect is not correct here. There is no timeline the author of the sentence is trying to establish, hence the use of past perfect is incorrect.

E) INCORRECT, This sentence changes the meaning of the sentence. Viola's style and methods ARE refreshing to present day theatre. Would is wrong here.

Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods - the recreational use of games, the ability to unlock the individual's capacity for creative self-expression, the focus of being part of an ensemble - was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present day theater.

Meaning analysis:
Viola Spolin had therapeutic style and methods:
1. the recreational use of games
2. the ability to unlock the individual's capacity for creative self-expression
3. the focus of being part of an ensemble
This style and methods were new to her fellows.
But from this part of this sentence we cannot see what exactly is being compared. It is illogical to compare Viola’s contemporaries with modern theater. Logically it should be present day artists.
So we can infer Viola Spolin’s therapeutic style and methods are distinctive to present day artists too.

Error analysis: Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods - the recreational use of games, the ability to unlock the individual's capacity for creative self-expression, the focus of being part of an ensemble - was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present day theater.
therapeutic style and methods – plural subject requires plural verb. “was” doesn’t agree in number with plural subject.
We can eliminate A and C.
As explained in the meaning analysis there is wrong comparison. Our comparison must make logical sense and convey intended meaning.
So we need plural past simple to express event in the past, that Viola’s therapeutic style and methods were new to her peers, this action was in the past. And Present simple to convey the meaning that Viola Spolin’s therapeutic style and methods are distinctive to present day artists too, this is general fact.

(A) was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present day theater

(B) were as fresh to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists

(C) has been as fresh an idea to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists
(she lived in the past, and her peers too, so we don't need "present perfect" here, "has" doesn't agree in number with subject)

(D) had been as fresh to her contemporaries as they are considered to be unique to present day theater
(there is no other action in the past to use "past perfect", //sim error)

(E) have been as refreshing to her contemporaries as they would be to present day theater
(as explained in C, we don't need "present perfect")

So B is correct

So B is correct

Choice B is the correct grammatical answer choice here, but doesn't it change the meaning of the original sentence? The original sentence says "it is considered unique in present day theater", so is it fine to assume that Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods are fresh to present day artists?

Hi goobo
Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods can only be relevant to the artists not the theater. Moreover, in the option A comparison
"as fresh an idea among her contemporaries" . Here contemporaries are compared to Theater, which is wrong. Contemporaries are fellow artists, so they should be compared to artists and not theatre.

Hope it makes sense.
Thanks

Quote:
Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods - the recreational use of games, the ability to unlock the individual's capacity for creative self-expression, the focus of being part of an ensemble - was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present-day theater.

Firstly reduce the sentence to as short as you can, keeping the meaning of the sentence preserved. Unnecessary part can be cut, to understand the sentence better.

Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods - the recreational use of games, the ability to unlock the individual's capacity for creative self-expression, the focus of being part of an ensemble- was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present day theater.

Now the statement can be read as - Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present day theater.

From this sentence, we can clearly say that style and methods are two different things and a plural word has to be used to describe them. But in the original sentence, it is mentioned as "was", which is singular. So clearly we can eliminate option A and any other options which repeat the same error. Option C with "has" also repeats the same error and can be eliminated. Now we are left with options B, D, E.

Quote:
(B) were as fresh to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists

This option is best among the choices and doesn't show any errors. Hence this should be the correct choice.
Quote:
(D) had been as fresh to her contemporaries as they are considered to be unique to present day theater

"They are considered to be unique" is awkward here and doesn't make sense to read with the original statement. Also, past continuous tense is not needed, we can search for options which have simple past. So I will eliminate this option.
Quote:
(E) have been as refreshing to her contemporaries as they would be to present day theater

"would be to present day theater" is completely nonsensical to say. Present continuous tense to future tense makes the statement a clear mess. So I will eliminate this option too.

OPTION: B

Hello goobo,

yes, MofeBhatia is right!
to make it simple, we can compare taste of apple with tasate of orange, but we cannot compare taste of apple with size of apple, it is illogical to do so.

Choice B is correct because it corrects comparison and //ism error of orginal sentece.

That's why meaning analisys of original sentence is very crucial. ;)

(A) was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present day theater- subject-verb agreement issue - Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods needs plural verb; pronoun it is incorrect for plural subject therapeutic style and methods; parallelism is better in B

(B) were as fresh to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists - Correct -- here parallelism is better - to her contemporaries and to present day artists

(C) has been as fresh an idea to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists - subject-verb agreement issue - Viola Spolin's therapeutic style and methods needs plural verb

(D) had been as fresh to her contemporaries as they are considered to be unique to present day theater - usage of past perfect is incorrect - no sequencing of two past events here; parallelism is better in B - contemporaries to present day theater

(E) have been as refreshing to her contemporaries as they would be to present day theater - usage of present perfect is incorrect to talk about a past event; parallelism is better in B - contemporaries to present day theater

Answer B

Official Explanation :

Styles and methods is the compound subject of the sentence, and the main verb is was. Therefore the verb must be plural.

Eliminate (A) and (C) because the verb was and has been, respectively, are singular.

Choice (B) conjugates was correctly, was changing it to were.

Choice (D) introduces an improper idiom with considered to be unique, so (D) can be eliminated.

Choice (E) conjugates the verb would be in the wrong tense, so (E) can be eliminated. The correct answer is (B).

(A) was as fresh an idea among her contemporaries as it is considered unique in present day theater

(B) were as fresh to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists

(C) has been as fresh an idea to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists

(D) had been as fresh to her contemporaries as they are considered to be unique to present day theater

(E) have been as refreshing to her contemporaries as they would be to present day theater

A,C - plural Subject(style and methods) is not in agreement with singular verb(was, has)
D - Considerd to be is incorrect idiom.
E - Distorts the meaning by usage of would. Would does not fit into context either as conditional or discussion of future in past.

Hence, B is the Answer.
