What should be the answer ?

Semicolon seperates 2 independent clauses

Between B and D

Tending towards D as it is more concise

"It is A and has become B" sounds logical

I'll pick B

B for me.
In my opinion also, " the best-preserved medieval town in Scandinavia " should precede " has become a World Heritage Site "

What should be the answer ?

After a semi-colon comes an complete sentence. Thus A and E are wong
'this' is B is a pronoun with an unclear referent.
D implies that the town has become the best-preserved medieval town in Scandanavia, changing the meaning

C is best

What should be the answer ?

; should be followed by a main clause and it shouldn't change meaning. I will go with D

OK One more reason why B is wrong.

It appears that "as a result of" is unidiomatic in GMAT.

I choose C

D does change the meaning of the sentence.... It says that it has become the best preserved town in Scandinvia presumably after it has become the World Heritage Site. Not good....

I checked the idiom list in Manhattan GMAT and it gives " as a result of" as a valid idiom

So we need to confirm this...Sorry about the confusion

(D)

Any sentence contains semicolon, the later part should act like a separate sentence with its own verb.

(B) is closer but 'as a result of this' is redundant.
