Westerlyn College began a pilot project for single mothers who wanted to return to school. Those who qualified for the program had to prove their academic and personal suitability by completing the General Aptitude Test Battery and the Strong Interest Inventory as part of the application process. It was important that at least 85% of students enrolled in the program complete the first year with a GPA of 3.3 or greater because future funding depended upon the attainment of this program goal. Fortunately, the project met this goal and was continued for an additional year.

If all of the above statements are true, which one of the following must also be true?

(A) At least 85% of single mothers enrolled at westerlyn college obtained a GPA of 3.3 or greater.

(B) The pilot project defined success as a student earning a GPA of 3.3 or greater.

(C) The general aptitude test battery and the strong interest inventory are reliable tools for evaluating student's potential.

(D) All students enrolled at westerlyn college are single mothers.

(E) None of the above is true.

Tricky one .. pre think in terms for a difference between westerly college and westerly colleges’s pilot program. Choice A has this particular pitfall

This is an inference question.
(A) At least 85% of single mothers enrolled at westerlyn college obtained a GPA of 3.3 or greater.
- Incorrect. In this sentence, the option is generalizing for all westerlyn college. However, argument only talks about a pilot project in the college.

(B) The pilot project defined success as a student earning a GPA of 3.3 or greater.
-Incorrect since success as per this argument was 85% of single women achieving a GPA of 3.3 or greater; not just a student...

(C) The general aptitude test battery and the strong interest inventory are reliable tools for evaluating student's potential.
-This seemed tempting to me. But, when I closely looked at the argument, I understood that it's not the student's potential, but about the academic and personal suitability

(D) All students enrolled at westerlyn college are single mothers.
- Incorrect. Similar to A, in this sentence, the option is generalizing for all westerlyn college. However, argument only talks about a pilot project in the college.

(E) None of the above is true.
-Correct one.

A) Wrong. The stimulus mentions that the goal of the project was met (85%), hence this percentage was met by the students of the program (single mothers). However, how about single mothers that attend the school, but are not within the program? Within this piece of information we cannot conclude A).

B) Wrong. The stimulus claims that the project's goal was met. However, there's no definition of success here. Insufficient.

C) Wrong. Student's potential might not be linked with student's grades. There could be other factors (e.g. how blends in the school)

D) Wrong. False generalization.

E) Correct!
