Career switcher from IT looking into going into management consulting possible exits into either internal strategy or general management. Wouldn't rule out possibility of becoming an entrepreneur somewhere down the line post consulting.

Right now I'm looking at Wharton with about 75% net tuition discount, and HBS where I get no assistance.
Champagne problems, I know. Racking my brain still.

HBS
Pros (relative to Wharton)
Section Experience - no exempting, everyone does the same schedule year 1.
FIELD 2/3 - Opportunity to consult/Run business as part of required core
Brand/Network -Best in the world.
Case Method - I engage with material well this way
Strong Management Focus (developing leaders)

Cons (relative to Wharton)
Location - Tucked away just south of Harvard U, school is just far enough away from everything to be annoying. Weather is also horrible.
Social - Cloistered campus feel
Cost - Ends up being roughly 2x the price of attending Wharton (including fees, room board)
Class on Friday

Pro/Con
Workload - HBS seems to have a larger work load during year 1.

Wharton
Pros (relative to HBS)
Location - Students live in center city, right by where everything is happening. Basically Whartonites have taken over the block adjacent to Rittenhouse.
Price - Half the price of Harvard.
Social - Whartonites seem to have more time for fun, and appear more laid back. There is also no grade disclosure which may help in this regard.

Cons (relative to HBS)
Brand/Network - Relative to HBS these two are weaker.
Academics/Teaching - I have strong technical background and I don't need to be walked through nitty gritty. Wharton class I sat in on Professor spent 30 minutes of an hour half lecture going over detailed financial equations for a homework assignment. Some might find this attractive but I would rather focus on bigger picture issues in lecture, and learn the details on my own time.

The experiences I can get at HBS (global consulting, entrepreneurship) as part of the core curriculum, I can get at Wharton via clubs. However a big draw for me is that these are integrated experiences. I also really like the case method for learning, I think it forces you to engage better with the material, when you sit in a case based class you can tell everyone has really taken the time to learn the material. Again Wharton has a mix of pedagogies, so I would still see ~30-50% case depending on what courses I took.

Currently, I'm leaning towards Harvard. Even thought it means more loans/less savings and most likely less time for fun, I think that the first year experience has everything I want in an MBA program. Also, as much as I'm against brand shopping I had a stronger reaction seeing HBS on my resume than Wharton. However the amount of money offered by Wharton is enough to make this an incredibly tough choice. I'm pretty sure I'll decided very close to the deadline.

Thought I would get opinions

It seems like HBS is the best place for you, the Wharton money might have me leaning strongly but HBS is one of the few schools where passing up the money can be rationalized.

Just to build on what you have said, Harvard is very much engaged in giving financial aid to students who need it. They have a very diligent process to understand if you have the means to pay for the course or not. And if you don't, they WILL help you. And they have the biggest endowment in the world to do so.

The only downside is you'll only be able to discover if you're eligible or not after you already accepted the offer (surprise surprise!).
