Hi melbin101,

Definitely an interesting / less typical work background, but I think that's a positive overall. Especially since you can show an interest in social development and technology. I can see Sloan's program fitting well with your goals. Your GMAT score is great. I assume you're converting your GPA to a 4.0 scale? You won't need to on the application. But if it is 3.1, then that's a bit low for Sloan, so could be a challenge. Otherwise I think you've got a shot at Sloan. Make sure your passion for solving such problems comes through strongly in your materials and use the video statement to show the school your personality and what you'll contribute to the class.

Good luck!

Hello all,

Hope everyone is doing good. I would love to know your opinion about my profile for MIT Sloan

Country: India
GMAT Score: 740 (Q:50, V:40, IR:8, AWA:4)
Total Work Experience (in years): 6
Undergraduate Institution: IIT Kanpur (India)
Undergraduate GPA: 3.1/4
Post Grad GPA: 3.4/4

Other Qualification: Post Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts (Young India Fellowship)

Awards: Mother Theresa Fellow ( Awarded to work in the social development sector)

Work Experience:
I am an engineer from IIT Kanpur, did Dual Degree in Civil Engineering and graduated in 2012. Post which I did a one year liberal arts fellowship and started working in development sector.
I worked for 2 years in sports for Development with Indian Football Foundation where I was responsible for developing the technical capabilities of 120 football coaches. Post this work I transitioned into a social business with Bengaluru Football Club where I was given the task of starting their soccer schools. I enrolled 600 students and earned a total revenue of $100,000 in the first year of Operations.

I was really excited about the impact I had created but was not satisfied with the scale. I realized that using Technology can help me amplify impact. Quit my job at Bengaluru FC, learnt coding and did two failed startups. After this stint I joined Digital Green ( a non-profit doing uber-pool kind of service to take farmers produce to the right market) as a Product Manager. I have been working here for the past 1.5 years and was promoted to Senior Manager, Biz Ops and strategy six months back.

Post MBA: I plan to start my own Tech based social enterprise. I am working on a few solutions which are based on using blockchain to help solve fund managements problems in the development sector.

Hello,

Please evaluate my profile for Sloan

Academics:
Bachelor of Engg (Electronics & Telecom) - 73.5% (Distinction)(University of Mumbai)
Master of Science (Telecom Engineering) - GPA 3.9/4.0 (University of Maryland, College Park)

During my masters, I took 4 management courses from R.H Smith school of Business at University of Maryland (studying alongside MBA grads)
That's when I got more interested towards getting a full time MBA

Also, I received an award from University of Maryland for academic excelllence (2nd Rank in MS program)
I was also a co-founder of UMD cricket club (1st of it's kind to promote the sport of Cricket and related events to all parts of campus)

GMAT - 750

I believe I have a good technical and hands on experience - working on some of the most challenging projects in the wireless industry
I have a good exposure of working with almost all of the major telecom companies, device vendors, equipment vendors.

Post MBA goal - Strategy role in Tech industry

Some other points which may add value to profile:

1. Will my UG GPA be offset by MS GPA and GMAT ?
2. At application my age will be 29 and I will start school at 30, will it be an issue for my post MBA ambitions (MC) ?
3. Since my current work experience doesn't have a brand name, how much will it hurt me ? Can you only get into top 10 if you are working in MNCs / Fortune 500s ?
4. Will it help if I retake and try to improve my verbal score to take the overall score to 760-770 ?

Thank You for reading.

Hi MayBSchool,
From what I can see, you've got a really strong profile for Sloan's EMBA program. Great GPA + EA score. Your work experience is right in their target range (though slightly below their average) and the client/project exposure sounds really strong. The non-profit boards are a nice extra too. Have you contacted someone in the Sloan program? For the EMBA program, they are usually quite open to speaking with applicants, so I would be sure to reach out and speak with someone in admissions before you apply.
Best of luck, and feel free to reach out direct if you have other questions.

Hi, I'm aiming for top B schools only.

Age 31, Male, Indian

Academics: UG: BE CIVIL, 3.0/4
Did LLB alongwith job from Delhi University (evening classes), 54%
GMAT 650 (Q 49, V 31, IR 8)

Have 9+ years of work ex in India's largest power equipment manufacturer and top 7 Public sector undertakings.

Started as Project engineer at thermal sites and then moved to HR, Business Administration and law.
Currently leading 3 different teams in HR, CSR and Business Administration and memeber of legal team.

Saved approx. $500,000 for the company in an arbitration (changing arguments and strategy).

In business administration, saved
Rs $50000 a year by using idle machinery from other units instead of hiring it.

Implemented online stores and helpdesks, thereby reducing manpower requirements by 70%.

Negotiated and took 50% discount on existing connections (negotiated with senior management including CMD of Telcom). Also have managed many indistrial disputes saving 500+ man-hours combined.

I'm also a certified behavioural trainer in my company and have trained 200+ employees.

Consistent top performer and can get LORs from seniors, Head of HR and Executive Director.

Avid biker, trekker.

I know my experience is on higher side and have low GMAT score, still what do you think of my chances.

Long term goal is to open a venture to tap energy generation in renewable energies (in small and micro levels) that solves the energy problems and upliftment of society in developing and underdeveloped countries. Mba in top b schools would help in getting the global outlook, networking, insight on new technologies and nuances of business to help achieve my dream.

Thanks a lot.

Hi there - you have really impressive professional experience. I would urge you to flesh out the “Why Sloan?” question more fully, as opposed to “Why an M7?” Interestingly, Sloan doesn’t really ask for that during the application, but you should have an elevator pitch ready even during the application process, I’d argue.

You will have a lot at your disposal that you could include in your cover letter; make sure you keep it succinct and action-oriented.

I think your biggest hurdle will be your GMAT score. Have you thought about retaking? Sloan considers your highest combined score so there’s not much downside to retaking if you have the time/energy and you think you can get a higher score.

Just my $0.02! Thanks again

Though not a large pool, the number of NIFT-ians has been consistently increasing to top B Schools.
PG: Masters in HRM from XLRI with CGPA 6.5
Be prepared to show in your application why you need a 2nd MBA, especially after one from a tier-1 school in India
GMAT: 720 (Q49, V39)
The GMAT though good, is below par for likes of Sloan, considering your Indian background. Consider a retake if possible, What other schools are you applying to?
GPA: 6.9/10, among the top 25% of the batch (4 as per mba.com conversion table)
No need to convert- let the transcripts show the grade. If top 25% of the class- it could be of help.

Additional Coursework:
- Business Analytics Specialisation (4courses + 1 capstone project), Wharton Online
- Business Stats with R, Duke University online
- Product Management Foundation - Darden University online
Good but make sure you show how these are relevant to your long term plans and the B School application.

Work Experience: 4 years
Industry: Indian Conglomerate -Aditya Birla Group (1.5 years, worked in HR & Project Management as part of management rotation program across Fashion Retail and Manufacturing) + Entrepreneurship (2.5 years)
In my experience with Aditya Birla Group, got an opportunity to work on a global assignment in the US as well.
In your detailed post the least information available is around your work ex. This is a bit surprising as the strength of work ex probably plays the biggest role in the application. Also, die to lack on the nature of your work (especially in entrepreneurship), career progress, key achievements, it is tough to not only judge the quality but also whether you have suitable experience to achieve the said goals. A school will look at a strong narrative that ties your past and an MBA to your future goals.

Extra-curricular Activities:
- Adventure Sports, have done multiple treks, hope to conquer the Himalayas someday.
- Huge comics nerd, and have been involved in comics strip design in college days
- Actively participated in sports, winning few medals at the university level.
- Was part of various clubs like the Social and Editorial club. Also managed crucial fests and engagements at UG level.
Some of these sound good. More than a laundry list focus on showcasing personal motivation, impact and contribution in these activities. Also how have these made you a better person/professional/candidate.

Post MBA Goals: Looking to get into strategy consultancy/Technology (Product) Firm
As mentioned earlier, your post does not make clear whether this is a realistic goal, so tough to comment. The school will look at how clear and realistic your goals are. Also, why can't you do this on your own (without an MBA)
Long-Term vision: To start tech product firm in space of Fashion/Retail in India. I see immense opportunity in India and hope to leverage business expertise & network I will get from a consultancy/Tech experience beside of course MBA alumni strength.
Again, link to you past experience and transferable skills need to be established. Plus if your aim is to build a firm in India, why a US education and specifically why Sloan (not my questions- but give compelling answers to these in your written application.
