SOLUTION

What is Ricky's age now?

(1) Ricky is now twice as old as he was exactly 8 years ago --> R = 2(R-8). We can solve for R. Sufficient.

(2) Ricky's sister Teresa is now 3 times as old as Ricky was exactly 8 years ago --> T = 3(R - 8). We cannot solve for R. Not sufficient.

Answer: A.

Statement 1) r = 2(r-8), definitely r can be determined - Sufficient.
Statement 2) s = 3(r-8) , we don't know s, we cannot determine r. Not Sufficient.

Let Ricky's age and Teresa's age now be R & T respectively.

1) R = 2(R-8);
R = 2R-16
R = 16; Sufficient.

2) T = 3(R-8)
2 variables; Insufficient.

Hence, Answer is (A).

We don't have to solve this question on paper.
1. we have Rickys age as an equation of what his age was 8 years ago. we can solve this and we will get his current age.
This is sufficient.
2. we get a third variable that is expressed in relation to Rickys age 8 years ago. we dont know anything else about rickys age so solving this would not be possible.
